Teck Alaska Incorporated, Red Dog Operations, one of the world's largest producers of zinc concentrate, is recruiting for a Personnel Officer.
Red Dog Mine, located in NW Alaska, is a large, technically challenging open pit mine, mill and port facility. It is a remote, but modern and well-equipped fly-in fly-out operation that provides free room and board for employees, and regular transportation to and from Anchorage or surrounding villages. Rotation schedule will be two weeks on-site and two week off-site.
Reporting to the Superintendent of Human Resources
Reporting to the Superintendent Human Resources, the Personnel Officer’s primary role is the implementation of the Red Dog Employment Plan, one of the principal components of the Operating Agreement between NANA and the Company related to hiring, training and retention of NANA shareholders. The Personnel Officer tracks the progress towards achievement of the goals of the Employment and Training Plan through data and implementation of programs that result in improvements to shareholder hire.
Leadership forms the basis of a safe and healthy workplace and involves both making a commitment to put health and safety into action and proactively managing it. The Personnel Officer will lead by example in ensuring that safe and healthy working conditions are maintained, that machinery and equipment are in good working order, that workers follow safe work practices, and that workers receive adequate training in their specific work tasks to protect their health and safety.
NATURE AND SCOPE OF POSITION
This is one of various positions reporting directly to the Superintendent, Human Resources, along with the Senior Human Resources Coordinator, Human Resources Coordinator, Physician Assistant(s), Billeting Clerk and Executive Assistant.
The Personnel Officer is guided by the Employment Plan, applicable federal and state laws, and the terms of the NANA/Teck Agreement.
This position has no direct reports and no direct budgetary responsibilities.

Promotes and ensures a safe work environment and safety conscious work force by supporting and following safety initiatives, procedures, and activities;
Advises and provides guidance to supervisors and other staff on the Teck/NANA Agreement and cross cultural training on local customs and traditions;
Coordinates with all Red Dog supervisory personnel including notification of all job openings to determine whether promotions from in-house can be considered for qualified shareholders; assist as a member of the HR team in recruitment, screening and placement of exempt and non-exempt employees; identify in-house shareholder hire/promotion best practices and work with management to replicate them; identify shareholder barriers to hire/promotion and provide recommendations for continual improvement;
Provides support and guidance to shareholders in career development and advancement opportunities including building social support processes that utilize family, community and Elders to reinforce work behaviors that result in success as well as reinforcement of management coaching and mentorship programs;
Compiles and prepares reports on achievements towards commitments agreed to by Teck and NANA through the Employment & Training Plan including maintain accurate and up to date records related to Shareholder employees such as employment records, training, demographic, wage data collection and reports such information to the Employment and Training Committee as needed;
Is an active member of the Employment & Training Committee.; and
Performs other duties as required.
Four-year college or university degree and six years of similar experience or at least ten years of directly related experience in lieu of a degree.
Previous experience dealing with similar work and demonstrated problem solving ability with the ability to execute work independently or as a team member.
Proficiency in operating a variety of software programs. Experience with Taleo and SuccessFactors considered an asset.
Ability to work with a variety of entities effectively to further shareholder employment and training goals.
Demonstrated organizational and management skills and a result-oriented focus.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion.
