Responsible for the verification of proper patient/specimen identification, appropriateness of specimen, and the processing and allocation of laboratory specimens and orders from all sources. Organizes the laboratory workflow and allocates work accordingly. Utilizes requisite equipment, instruments, and computer systems. Performs specified testing and evaluates and reports patient results within the scope of established testing methods and responsibilities. Performs routine maintenance and quality control procedures on specified equipment and troubleshoots if necessary. Assists in the development and implementation of new procedures, computer functionality, etc. May assume responsibility for one or more laboratory projects or functions - i.e. CQI, safety, quality control, regulatory, administrative, staff development, computer (LIS, HIS, hospital intranet, PC applications), etc. Responsible for the collection of specimens on all age populations as assigned with minimal patient impact. Assists in the training of other laboratory personnel and acts as a resource for less experienced co-workers. Updates knowledge, skills and applies appropriately. Maintains age-specific and other required competencies. Performs other duties as assigned. Works as an individual and as part of a team with general supervision/periodic review by supervisory staff. May be trained in specific Transfusion Services duties: preparing thawed, pooled, and divided blood products, issuing of blood products, processing of blood products, etc.

Experience Requirements

Position requires three (3) years of recent relevant experience in a clinical setting if candidate does not hold an MLT A.A.S. or the equivalent certification/registration. No additional experience is required with MLT A.A.S. degree or equivalent.

Education Requirements

Position requires MLT A.A.S. (or equivalent certification), or three years of recent relevant experience in a clinical setting. Appropriate ASCP/NCA certification preferred.
