Reporting directly to the Vice President for Alumni Relations, the Deputy Vice President (DVP) for Alumni Relations is an integral member of the Alumni and Development team providing strategic planning and leadership. The DVP will work with the VP for Alumni Relations in the overall management, guidance and operation of the University Alumni Relations unit, while providing managerial leadership and strategies relative to the alumni relations programs and functions related to School-based relations, regional and shared interest group programming, events and programs, the Welcome Center and Columbia Alumni Association (CAA) alumni services and outreach. The DVP promotes best practices, builds and supports high performing units and strengthens strategies related to School-based relations, regional and shared interest group programming, events and programs, the Welcome Center and CAA alumni services and outreach; plans and oversees unit budgets while ensuring compliance with University guidelines and policies; reviews, monitors and tracks expenses; collaborates with the VP for Alumni Relations and other senior members within the organization to identify and develop best business practices and procedures for University Alumni Relations, focusing particularly in the areas of budget, office management and operational needs; monitors process and procedures, implements protocols based upon proven methodology to be used by the Alumni Relations team; ensures team's adherence to these processes; ensures all interactions are high quality; accountable for maintaining a strong customer service focus in all activities and directing the team to do the same; maintains awareness of upcoming support needs and focal points for leadership; shares this information with the VP for Alumni Relations, other teams and external community as appropriate; manages the day-to-day interactions (scheduling, agenda, etc.) of the Alumni Management Team; partners with the VP for Alumni Relations to supervise, guide and develop a management team of alumni relations directors transforming into player/coaches and collaborative team members, using annual performance expectations as key management tools; the DVP maintains managerial responsibility for a team of approximately 21 alumni relations officers and 3 administrative assistants; provides ongoing performance feedback and forward prospect-centered action for each area; ensures timely and accurate completion of project assignments in support of alumni relations initiatives and annual performance goals; successfully partners across various units throughout the alumni and development community to further promote the strategic vision of University Alumni Relations; works collaboratively & independently utilizing innovative and creative thinking in developing the long term strategic operational plan; performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications for Grade Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant
Bachelor's degree required; a minimum of 8 years related experience is required. Minimum 3 years of demonstrated leadership / managerial responsibility required.

Demonstrated ability to work in a high pressure, fast-paced environment. Demonstrated excellence in a variety of competencies including: project management, teamwork, analytical thinking and client/customer awareness. Must possess strong analytical and communication skills and experience with strategic planning processes. Must possess the ability to develop, supervise staff, work with changing priorities and multiple projects. Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including a high level of attention to detail and active listening skills. Must be able to problem-solve and troubleshoot, in addition to the ability to work independently in a dynamic team environment. Demonstrated ability to effectively partner with a diverse group of administrators and academic leaders. Must be able to negotiate issues, resolve problems and have strong influencing skills. The successful candidate must be a strategic thinker, effective in moving strategic agendas, politically savvy, ensure the utmost discretion in all matters, as well as possess an ability to work well with all levels of management, both internally and externally, be flexible in nature, have a sound judgment with a collaborative style that fosters teamwork and cooperation beyond the immediate team to the broader organization. Must have a passion for excellent customer service and commitment to exceptional quality.
Advanced degree preferred; prior project management experience in complex organizations a plus; Alumni relations experience, including previous work experience in higher educational institution highly preferred.
