Our Medical Center is located in Providence, RI with outpatient clinics located in Middletown, RI, Hyannis and New Bedford, MA. We provided high quality comprehensive outpatient and inpatient care to Veterans residing in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. Rhode Island, also known as the Ocean State, offers a range of lifestyles to those seeking the advantages of an exciting city or relaxing country setting.
This RN (Inpatient Psychiatry) position is located in Nursing Service at the Providence VA Medical Center and is a bargaining unit position.
education and experience will be reviewed by a Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. The recommended salary may be at any point in the range listed for this vacancy.
This is a permanent, part-time position. Days of the week will vary depending on unit needs and will require working every other weekend and holiday.

Applies the nursing process to individuals and groups of patients with a variety of mental health and co-existing medical/ surgical conditions, including assessment of health history, review of systems and physical/psychosocial assessments utilizing established tools.
Integrates biopsychosocial concepts, cognitive skills, and technically competent practice in providing care that fosters mental health rehabilitation and recovery.
Manages patient care by promoting positive patient outcomes including the areas of medical and psychiatric emergencies, detox (withdrawal symptoms) and patient safety.
Provides guidance to all caregivers and collaborates with the Nurse Manager regarding the plan of care and educational requirements as indicated to support patient needs.
Reports status of service needs and contributes to problem resolution and modification of processes as necessary.
Involved in the administration, treatment planning and discharge process and is a key participant in the maintenance of a safe, stable and therapeutic environment.
Functions in a self-directed manner as a team member, team leader or shift charge nurse as assigned or designated.
Reports directly to the Inpatient Mental Health Nurse Manager.

Applicants must be physically and mentally able to efficiently perform the essential functions of the position without hazard to themselves or others. Applicants for this position must pass a pre-employment medical examination.
Graduate of a state approved, National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)/Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited school of nursing.
A full, active, current and unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse.
- Preferred Requirements:
- Minimum of one (1) year medical/surgical nursing with recent experience in adult/geriatric psychiatric nursing practice.
- Graduate of an NLNAC/CCNE accredited school of nursing with a BSN or Bachelor's Degree in a field related to nursing preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to be self-directed.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in problem solving and decision making.
- Highly-motivated, dependable and flexible individual with a positive attitude.
- Effective interpersonal relations and a demonstrated ability to work well in an interdisciplinary care environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to apply the nursing process to clinical practice.
- Demonstrated experience in patient/family teaching.
- Experience with group therapy/diversional recreational therapy.
