Our Life Science division offers a unique and challenging opportunity for a Sr. R&D Engineer based out of our Pensacola, FL location. The Sr. R&D Engineer is responsible for leading and supporting project engineering activities within the Centre for Applied Materials Science research & development group (CAMS R&D) working closely with the Pall Pensacola manufacturing plant. Installing new equipment and/or technology within the manufacturing facility environment. Performing the necessary verification and validation to confirm requirements and specifications are met fully for intended equipment performance typically through a systematic process – such as an Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ), Performance Qualification (PQ), and/or gauge R&R. Managing capital and non-capital projects within R&D to meet business objectives of new equipment, technology, product quality, and/or productivity improvement. Generating, managing, and reporting project financial justifications and project budgets. Building and leading teams in pursuit of the above objectives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The general duties and responsibilities of a Sr. R&D Engineer include:

Acts as Project Leader, Lead Engineer, or similar leadership role in the execution of capital and non-capital projects in support of CAMS R&D and working within manufacturing activities, including:

Project initiation phase, planning phase, execution phase, and evaluation phase development and execution.

Development and application of work breakdown structures, Gantt chart structures, Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) chart structures, and/or network diagrams.

Project cost/budget development, tracking, and reporting.

Project team recruitment, management, coordination, and supervision.

Application of the above in projects with total project values of > $1 million.

Performs equipment installation within a manufacturing environment including determining critical equipment specifications and requirements; assimilating a Request for Information (RFI), Request for Proposal (RFP), and/or Request for Quote (RFQ); negotiating and managing purchase agreements, delivery, and installation; and qualification of the new equipment (IQ/OQ/PQ).

Develops project financial justifications, including Return on Investment (ROI) analysis, Return on Equity (ROE) analysis, Return on Capital (ROC) analysis and/or other justifications as required.

Generates project work scope definition, development, drafting, bid submission, bid evaluation, and contract management, particularly in the context of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) contracting as well as General Contractor (GC) building activities.

Plans and executes routine engineering assignments that involve product design, process development, material testing, and validation to support the company’s business objectives for existing and new media products.

Researches and develops new technologies to improve current manufacturing processes and/or product quality and performance.

Evaluates new or current systems and/or processes to isolate root causes and implements corrective actions.

Designs sophisticated equipment, processes, and test equipment for the use in media R&D and possibly membrane manufacturing using AutoCAD.

Design experiments to solve problems related to improving or developing new processes using creative and innovative concepts.

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

A Senior R&D Engineer is expected to have demonstrated the following knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position:

Knowledge of engineering fundamentals as typically acquired by completion of a Bachelor of Science/Arts (BS/BA) in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, engineering technology, or other engineering discipline or technically equivalent field and, additionally, eight or more years of demonstrated experience in project engineering, process engineering, manufacturing engineering, quality engineering, and/or R&D.

Experience in specification, vendor selection, and management/coordination of building construction, process support equipment and/or process equipment fundamental design, specification, and fabrication and installation supervision, such as:

Piping systems, fluid pumping & transfer, fluid temperature control.

Airflow, blower application, temperature and humidity control, both in a general Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) context and a process air control context.

Polymer extrusion, die design

Web handling, polymer or film processing

High temperature equipment, heat transfer, radiant heat analysis

Other control or tempering processes.

Experience in the drafting, execution, and/or evaluation of FDA (or similar) validation protocols, product validations, new product introduction, product commercialization, and/or similar endeavors.

Developing and implementing accurate equipment documentation, such as process and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID), mechanical drawings in SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD, functional specifications, factory and customer test (FAT/CAT), gauge R&R, and installation/operational/performance qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ).

Working knowledge (awareness) of common industrial codes (most recent versions), including but not limited to:

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (BPV) & B31 series piping code, particularly ASME B31.3 Process Piping.

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70/National Electrical Code (NEC) particularly experience in installation of process/industrial equipment in classified hazardous locations.

NFPA 101 Life Safety Code.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration Codes (29 CFR 1910) applicable sections.

Proficiency in the use of the latest versions of the following software packages or equivalent:

Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint (required),

Microsoft Project (highly preferred),

AutoCAD, any version (preferred),

Allen Bradley RS 5000 (optional),

Wonderware Factory Suite (optional),

Quality Analyst and/or Minitab (optional).

Preferred experience in application of the basic principles of Lean Manufacturing, Problem Solving Techniques (Kepner Tregoe or similar), and/or Six Sigma methods in product/process design, improvement, or similar endeavor, specifically in areas directly applicable to Pall Pensacola’s operations, including:

Proficiency executing/implementing Design of Experiments (DOE’s).

Use of Statistical Process Control (SPC) measurements and application of controls/control charts, including optimization.

Process mapping, Value Stream Mapping (VSM), and Ishikawa Diagrams.

Other systematic tools.

Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively and efficiently communicate in oral and written forms at any level within the organization, interact effectively with customers and external business professionals, and to function productively in a team environment.

Ability to prioritize activities and to remain flexible and adaptable to changing priorities.

Demonstrated ability to lead, plan, organize, and execute technical and/or development projects.

Demonstrated ability to direct the work of others assigned to project(s).
