Medical Records Coder

Due to our recent expansion, we are recruiting an exceptional Medical Records Coder to join our Hospital Division.
NOTE: This position is located in our hospital in Houston, TX.
Codes medical records, including all diagnoses, operative and diagnostic procedures in patient medical records, using the International Classification of Diseases and enters coded information into an automated system. This position works directly with our Hospital Division staff.
Using the coding system, assigns and records an accurate code to all diagnoses, procedures, and operations as documented by the attending physician in the patients' medical records.
Insures that all factors necessary for assigning an accurate DRG (Diagnostic Related Group) are present, and that all diagnoses are ranked properly.
Contacts attending physicians regarding questions on diagnoses, need for greater detail or different terminology in order to assign accurate codes to medical records.
Enters final diagnostic code numbers and narrative descriptions of diagnoses and procedures into an automated grouper system.
Provides information and responds to inquiries regarding medical documentation and DRG'S to hospital staff, particularly Utilization and Quality Assurance staff, Patient Accounts staff and the Risk Manager.
Knowledge of the principles of the unit medical record system and its operation.
Knowledge of medical terminology; knowledge of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD9-CM) codes.
Ability to understand and code medical records.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Exceptional organizational and follow-through skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of all patient and/or employee information to assure patient and/or employee rights are protected.
High School Graduate; college degree preferred.
AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) and/or Associate of Science degree with RHIT; BS with RHIA or eligibility to sit for the CCS exam.
Coding experience or training on use of the coding manual and guidelines, medical terminology and anatomy sufficient to pass an entry-level coding screening test (test will be paper and pencil).
3+ years of short term acute care inpatient coding, LTACH experience a plus.
