This position is a full-time, 10-month position (Sept. 1-June 30) reporting to the Associate Director of Campus Ministry. The Campus Minister shares in the pastoral and spiritual leadership and service of the university community. This position is responsible for the pastoral support of diverse Christian students, strengthening ecumenical understanding and collaboration, and engagement with students of varied religious traditions. In addition, this position promotes interfaith understanding and relationships. I. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide pastoral leadership, service, and outreach to the SCU community
  • Collaborate with the Campus Ministry team in planning, implementing and assessing services, programs, events and offerings
  • Provide leadership for diverse and ecumenical Christian student ministries
  • Promote interfaith understanding and dialogue
  • Strengthen internal and external partnerships that support SCU's fundamental values of respecting religious diversity and promoting interreligious dialogue
  • Provide administrative functions
  • II. Specific Responsibilities
  • Provide pastoral leadership, service, and outreach to the SCU community
  • Provide pastoral counseling to students, regardless of religious affiliation
  • Participate in and help to lead Campus Ministry-sponsored campus events and programs
  • Collaborate with Campus Ministry team in planning, implementing and assessing services, programs, events and offerings
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings
  • Engage in discussions regarding the vision and priorities of Campus Ministry
  • Participate in professional development
  • Provide leadership for diverse and ecumenical Christian student ministries
  • Plan and lead programs for Protestant and evangelical students (e.g. small groups, Bible study, service opportunities, worship, fellowship, retreats, prayer gatherings)
  • Support and advise Core Christian Fellowship, a non-denominational student club and other Christian student clubs as needed or requested
  • Plan 2-3 campus-wide ecumenical services per academic year (e.g. University Christmas service, Ash Wednesday) and promote ecumenical understanding and engagement
  • Coordinate events for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (January 18-25)
  • Offer support for Orthodox students as needed
  • Promote interfaith understanding and dialogue
  • Support and advise the student Interfaith Council, including dialogue, education and service projects, and its participation in campus events such as the Tunnel of Oppression and Hope and Global Village
  • Act as the CM liaison to student groups of various faith traditions (e.g. Jewish Student Union, Muslim Student Association, Hindu Student Council), providing support and collaboration for events such as the annual Passover Seder and other holiday celebrations
  • Plan 2-3 campus-wide interfaith prayer services per academic year (e.g. Thanksgiving, National Elections, Earth Day)
  • Strengthen internal and external partnerships that support SCU?s fundamental values of respecting religious diversity and promoting interreligious dialogue
  • Serve as CM liaison to other departments (e.g. Religious Studies, Ignatian Center) to promote interfaith engagement and understanding of religious pluralism
  • Develop relationships with faculty and staff who serve as resources and representatives of various religious traditions
  • Develop relationships with local Christian churches, including the churches in partnership with Core Christian Fellowship, and make referrals for worship
  • Develop relationships with local religious bodies and interfaith organizations that offer community for students and education for the campus (e.g. Hillel of Silicon Valley, Silicon Valley Interreligious Council)
  • Represent Campus Ministry on university committees and/or at events related to religious diversity, pluralism and inclusion, and in appropriate liturgical functions
  • Screen outside religious organizations wishing to operate on campus, as needed
  • Provide administrative functions
  • Supervise student intern/s
  • Provide assessment of programs/events
  • Maintain budget accountability for area
  • Oversee communication efforts for area
  • Represent Campus Ministry on various university committees and/or at campus events
  • Provide appropriate reports to the Associate Director and Director
  • III. Qualifications
  • An active member or clergy of a Protestant tradition
  • Master of Divinity or other Master-level degree in theologically fluent area (with some focus on ecumenical and interfaith understanding) required, and two years' experience preferred
  • Other job related skills/background
  • Experience with young adult spiritual formation
  • Excellent communication skills, including proficiency in relevant technology or willingness to learn
  • Availability for regular evening and weekend work
  • Competency in multicultural, ecumenical and interfaith issues
  • Knowledge of Ignatian spirituality and the tradition of Jesuit education preferred
