Principal contributions are managerial and scientific, characterized by originality and creativity. This is the top research position, which is normally occupied by the principal investigator. Oversees all aspects of management, scientific technological development, and operations for a major research project or research facility. Develops long-range plans for research projects and oversees the development of research projects. Ensures research projects progress according to plan. Investigates, modifies and applies new procedures, techniques or applications of technology. Oversees the establishment of goals and operating procedures, practices, and guidelines. Oversees activities related to data collection and analysis. Supervises a large staff of researchers and research support staff. Prepares grant/funding applications. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Establishes, monitors, and controls project budgets. Conducts research in area of expertise. Writes articles, reports and manuscripts. Presents research findings at meetings and/or conference.
About the Unit
The Computation Institute (CI) is a joint initiative between The University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory with a mission to advance science through innovative computational approaches. It serves as an intellectual nexus, bringing together researchers from different disciplines with common interests in advancing the state-of-the-art in computing and its applications. The CI is also a resource center for those building and applying advanced computational platforms for science, providing expert assistance to scholars whose work requires the most advanced computational methods.
Unit Job Summary
The Computation Institute's Research Director position will develop and oversee data analytics initiatives in computational urban sciences ranging from sociology to economics, from healthcare to education, applying and adapting computational and data analysis tools and techniques to pursue disciplinary research agendas in these areas. This will involve working with faculty and staff to identify potential funding sources, develop collaborative funding proposals, and hire and manage data analytics staff members and students.
Doctoral degree in computer science or a masters degree and at least ten years of experience in data analytics required.
A minimum of five years of relevant research experience required.
Experience managing research projects preferred.
Experience developing Web based and client/server applications preferred.
Experience in Cloud Computing preferred.
Experience in Grid Computing preferred.
Experience with SQL, relational and NoSQL database concepts preferred.
Experience with Web security technologies such as OAuth, OpenID, SSL and PKI preferred.
Experience with XML, XSLT, Xpath, and XQuery technologies preferred.
Strategic leadership skills required.

Budget management skills required.
Advanced knowledge in relevant scientific field required.
