Position summary Working within a team this position is responsible for specifying designing implementing maintaining and evolving NWEA’s Product Engineering (“PE”) infrastructure ensuring that all clientbased systems and data are operational and available 24 hours a day 7 days a week This includes all servers storage and networking equipment The Senior Systems Engineer also performs capacity planning explores new technologies leads process improvement efforts and provides new designs that increase our capacity reliability security and availability while moving the organization into our technology future A Senior Systems Engineer is expected to lead projects and take initiative to solve problems with little direction Responsibilities Design and document system infrastructure and procedures Participate in capacity planning efforts Communicate design options to the Infrastructure Architect Work with project managers department heads and team members to determine project approaches parameters and priorities Communicate plans status and issues to management Lead the evaluation selection and deployment of new technologies and tools Install configure maintain and automate a Redhat Linux environment Install and configure third party application components Work with colleagues to optimize overall system performance This includes working with applications network storage database and server technology Provide support to internal and external clients including participation in the 24x7 oncall rotation Assist in development of NWEA security policies and procedures regarding system and data access Train and mentor other team members Provide seniorlevel expertise and consultation regarding system configuration and quality Perform system audits document findings and publish recommendations Keep abreast of technical developments to ensure the NWEA is able to take advantage of industry advances Develop and foster strong working relationships with clients and staff skills and abilities Expert level administration of a productiongrade Redhat Linux environment Demonstrated experience configuring multitier JAVA and webbased applications Exposure to and understanding of VMware virtualization is preferred Expert level skills and knowledge in network technologies Cisco networking experience required Knowledge of security monitoring including Intrusion Detection F5 loadbalancing experience a plus Expert level analytical abilities diagnostic skills and technical aptitude Intermediate level of understanding information security best practices and principles including experience creating and maintaining system safeguards required to implement them Experience in 24x7 High availability productionsustaining processes including “lights out” support and remote administration Experience in managing equipment installs and availability in a Data Center environment Excellent listening skills and a commitment to communicate clearly completely and in a timely manner Initiative – can work unsupervised selfmotivated Exceptional skills in partnering with clients and staff and in developing and maintaining long term supportive relationships Ability to assess the effectiveness of processes and procedures and lead improvement efforts include documenting and implementing Ability to research complex issues yet knowing when to ask for help Education and experience Minimum bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered in lieu of a degree Minimum 8 years related experience with at least 4 years experience in the following area Redhat Linux Systems Administration and Network Administration Cisco certification CCNA required CCNE or higher preferred Experience in automating large scale Linux environments utilizing PERL HTML Python PHP and Shell scripting Experience with Puppet Automation a plus Benefits NWEA’s generous
