The University of Michigan Medical School Bioinformatics Core is part of Biomedical Research Core Facilities and the University of Michigan Medical School, Office of Research. The Bioinformatics Core is seeking a Senior Bioinformatics Developer-Analyst to join our team. The Bioinformatics Core is a central group that performs bioinformatics analysis across diverse areas of science for the UM researchers. The main focus is on next-generation sequencing analysis including exome sequencing, genome resequencing, RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq, methylation, de novo assembly of genomes and may include the development and validation of novel algorithms and pipelines as well as the testing and utilization of existing software algorithms. |
The Bioinformatics Senior Developer Analyst will work with other members of the Bioinformatics Core both Analysts and Developers to develop and improve the analysis software and pipelines for highly automated bioinformatics analysis through direct involvement in scripting and programming; especially addressing the nuances and changing platforms and software which are the current environment. The Developer Analyst will work closely with Bioinformatics Core / DNA Sequencing Core scientists to develop and validate existing methods of analysis and insure accurate workflow, methods and biological results. Further there is a plan to develop and implement data tracking, storage and retrieval for large volume of data generated by the Bioinformatics Core. This will include overall data pipeline and workflows for data movement and analysis between the DNA Sequencing Core and Bioinformatics Core. This could be extended to additional Cores within the scope of the Biomedical Research Core Facilities (BRCF). It is also expected that the Developer will have substantial bioinformatics experience and knowledge and will regularly review bioinformatics literature, learn new methods and advance skills and techniques in bioinformatics with the whole group. Documentation of code and preparing reports on analysis methods will also be part of the expected duties.
A minimum of a Master?s of Science in Computer Science and Bioinformatics or related field is required. 5-7 years of experience in application development and experience in a Bioinformatics Development Group is essential. The candidate should be proficient with Linux, scripting and programming languages (Java, C, C++) as well as have familiarity with gene and protein sequence analysis tools for assembly, alignment and annotation including data visualization. The Developer will need relational database skills, such as MySQL, Oracle or SQLServer and will need to be proficient in bioinformatics scripting languages such as PERL or Python. The Developer will document workflows and analyses and interact with both Bioinformatics Analysts as well as scientific researchers, thus excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Job openings are posted for a minimum of seven calendar days. This job may be removed from posting boards and filled anytime after the minimum posting period has ended.
