Dispatcher I: $3039/month (Training level)
Dispatcher II: $3358/month (after successful completion of training level)

Boulder County Sheriff's Office has immediate openings for a Dispatcher I. This is a trainee level classification. Upon successful completion of the training program, trainees may be promoted to Dispatcher II at the approval of the Communications Director. The Communications Dispatcher I must become proficient at handling complex systems, multiple duties and responsibilities in a stressful and highly technical environment. You must be able to proficiently use 30+ software systems and exercise independent judgment. Work involves extended periods of sitting while working closely with others with occasional periods working alone. The Communications Center is staffed 24 hours day, 365 days per year. During training your shift assignment will be based on the trainer you are assigned to and will require you to be exposed to all shifts. Upon completion of training, shifts are assigned based on seniority. You should expect to work any shift, including days, nights, weekends, on call and holidays.

Examples of Duties:

* Proficiently use/operate 30+ software systems. Including but not limited to the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), EMS Systems, CCIS, and numerous other alarm, fire, and weather related systems.
* Requires the operation of specialized communications equipment including radios, emergency operations computer equipment, paging and cellular/hard line phone equipment and early warning systems.
* Requires the ability to listen, communicate, and speak clearly enough to be understood while answering incoming radio, 9-1-1 and administrative telephone calls.
* Question/assist callers in emergency situations; accurately ascertain the location and nature of the emergency.
* Ability to receive, comprehend and rapidly relay accurate information.
* Triage multiple calls and refer callers to other appropriate county agencies and departments.
* Dispatch applicable emergency law and fire personnel and equipment based on geographical and protocol knowledge with the aide of computer software systems.
* Cross-train to work all positions within the Center (Law, Fire, Medical, Data, Call Taker)
* Monitor, manage, and coordinate traffic on several radio channels.
* Fulfill all requests for supplemental information, personnel and equipment in a timely manner.
* Record and monitor the status of personnel and equipment to ensure safety of all personnel.
* Complete and maintain CPR and Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certifications. Provide pre-arrival instructions according to Emergency Medical protocols.
* Requires skill in making effective decisions under stressful conditions, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, and remaining calm during emergency situations. Must be able to exercise good judgment and make sound decisions to ensure personnel and public safety.
* Requires the ability to perform repetitive motion at a keyboard/console on an intermittent basis for extended time periods per work shift.
* Ability to work effectively with the public, other employees and agencies.
* Perform other related duties as requested/required.

Required Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Type a minimum of 40 wpm with accuracy.
• Prior emergency dispatching or similar work experience preferred.
• Previous CCIS, CAD, and EMD experience preferred.
• Thorough knowledge of Boulder County and surrounding areas preferred.
• Ability to operate/use multiple computers and displays, and written materials.
• Read and comprehend maps and mapping systems, terminology and provide directions.
Physical Requirements
Primarily sedentary physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 40 pounds and frequently be able to reach above shoulder, at or below waist level at the workstation; occasional lifting, carrying, walking and standing; frequent hand/eye coordination to operate computer keyboard and mice and office equipment; vision for reading, recording and interpreting information; speech communication and hearing and ability to maintain mental capacity to communicate with employees and members of the public with stressful situations.

Special Requirements:
Must successfully complete and pass a thorough application and background investigation, polygraph examination, drug screen, audiogram (hearing test) and psychological evaluation.
Supplemental Information:
Process:
1. Applications are screened by for qualifications/skills and referred to Communications Supervisors.
2. Initial testing is done on a dispatch console simulator to access the applicant's ability to cope with various and multiple information. This test is pass/fail. Typing test is also administered. Applicants who pass will be interviewed by Communications Supervisors. (No set dates for testing, applicants will be notified.)
3. Communications Supervisors will refer applicants who pass the above testing and interviews to Personnel for an additional 3-part written test. These tests identify general aptitude, personality traits, and working under pressure.
4. Personnel will also conduct a background interview with selected applicants.
5. Hiring decisions are made and Conditional Offers of Employment are offered to the selected applicants.
6. Polygraphs, psychological exam, drug screens, and audiograms (hearing tests) are scheduled.
7. Final hiring decisions are made based on polygraph, psychological, background, audiogram, and drug screen results.
8. Hire date is decided.
9. This process may take several weeks or months depending on the number of candidates being tested and the scheduling of each of the steps.
