Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics, (with 31 varsity sports, 78 club sports, and extensive recreational sports programs) is seeking a dynamic, experienced, human resources professional to lead its HR department. This fast-paced and exciting opportunity will provide direct operational oversight and strategic leadership for Intercollegiate Athletics Human Resources by fostering innovation through organizational improvement and change. With a dual reporting relationship to the Director of Athletics and Associate Vice President of Human Resources, the Director will develop, plan, and implement strategic human resources functions for Intercollegiate Athletics, including recruitment and hiring, job classification and compensation, employee relations, professional development, rewards and recognition, and diversity initiatives. In collaboration with Intercollegiate Athletics senior leadership and the central Office of Human Resources, the Director will align and execute HR strategy with overall Intercollegiate Athletics strategic planning and lead the implementation of Intercollegiate Athletics and University Human Resources programs and services. The Director will advise Intercollegiate Athletics senior leadership, management and coaches on staffing and organizational plans; provide counsel on policies and practices; investigate and mediate complex human resources issues; and serve as an advocate for employee issues. Additionally, in coordination with the Director of Athletics, the Office of General Counsel and the Office of Human Resources, the Director will participate in the development and revision of new and existing employment contracts. The Director will champion and positively impact diversity in the workplace through proactive programs and processes and ensure compliance with all federal and state laws and University policies. Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher plus ten years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master’s degree with progressively responsible strategic HR management experience in intercollegiate athletics or major league sports administration preferred. Experience in strategic HR management and leadership in recruitment and compensation, performance management and employee relations and organizational development is required. In addition to exceptional technical skills and management abilities, the candidate must have a passion for delivering high-quality service; the ability to develop and mentor staff; ability to manage large-scale projects with diverse groups of people; and the ability to work both independently and cooperatively with various levels of faculty, staff, and administrators. Demonstrated competencies in the following areas will also be required: superior verbal and written communication skills; strong quantitative and analytical skills; a collaborative and flexible decision-making style; a commitment to fostering diversity and equal opportunity; and the vision to assess and proactively lead organizational change based on changing needs.
