The College of Design at Iowa State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair, Department of Graphic Design, at the rank of associate or full professor with tenure. Working with thirteen accomplished graphic design faculty members, as well as with students, staff, and alumni, the new Chair will have an opportunity to articulate and advance a clear vision for the Department of Graphic Design in all three dimensions of the university's land grant mission: learning, discovery, and engagement.
A national leader in user-centered graphic design education, the Department offers a NASAD accredited professional BFA in Graphic Design, an MA and an MFA in Graphic Design as well as the country's only MA in Environmental Graphic Design. The department enrolls 232 undergraduate and 41 graduate students following a highly rigorous and competitive admission process. Within the fundamental framework of typography, design history, theory, principles, and practice, students engage traditional and emerging technologies and are prepared for professional practice in visual communication, including information design, branding, interactive design, mapping and other communication systems. Over 95% of ISU Graphic Design students are employed in the profession shortly after graduation.
Reporting to the Dean of the College of Design, the Chair will be responsible for faculty hiring and evaluation, the departmental budget, degree program course development, program assessment and accreditation oversight, and communication of departmental values and interests within the department, college, university, and academic and professional communities at large.

A terminal degree in graphic design, visual communications design or related field is required, as is significant experience and a distinguished record of nationally or internationally recognized work in teaching as well as research, and/or professional practice that would warrant a tenured appointment at the rank of full or associate professor. Candidates must show evidence of excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
Evidence of strong academic leadership and fiscal and personnel management.
A track record of supporting faculty development and curricular innovation, as well as student development and recruitment.
Experience in resource development, grant writing, and stewardship .
Experience in emerging areas of visual communications including interactive design, information design, user experience (UX), and/or interdisciplinary design.
