Cornell University seeks a Leader for its large, diverse, and decentralized 4-H Youth Development program. The position requires a combination of scholarship, administration, inspiration, and teamwork. The State Leader will be located, along with the state staff, in the Family Life Development Center, a research and outreach unit of the College of Human Ecology, where colleagues are engaged in program development and evaluation and in translational research related to children and families and to youth development. A key responsibility of the State Leader is linking county-level programs with the research-based resources of Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and College of Human Ecology.
The State 4-H Leader ensures that programs align with the current three national and state extension youth development areas of science, healthy living and citizenship and as well, reflect the overall mission and program objectives of Cornell Cooperative Extension. This person inspires collaboration and teamwork to plan, deliver and evaluate a contemporary and innovative youth program while effectively and efficiently serving the needs of target audiences. The State 4-H leader develops relationships with Extension Administration team, key stakeholders, legislators, national partners, leaders of other youth organizations, and state agencies. Collaborative work is essential to secure external resources for research and outreach activities and promote an effective working relationship among county and campus-based faculty and staff.
Working under the direct supervision of the Family Life Development Center’s Associate Director for Youth Development, the State Leader builds connections between Cornell campus-based faculty and staff and educators located in 57 counties and New York City. He or she leads a complex youth organization with thousands of volunteer leaders that supports clubs, after-school programs, school-based programs, camps, and many other kinds of activities. Connections must be created and sustained with state agencies, USDA, and other youth-serving organizations. In addition to being an inspiring leader and a skilled manager, the State Leader will aid faculty and educators in building a stronger research base.
This is a 5 year term appointment with possibility of renewal. The position carries the academic title, Senior Extension Associate, which requires an earned doctorate in a related field. The person appointed will also be an Assistant Director of Cornell Cooperative Extension and Secretary and ex-officio member of the NY State 4-H Foundation.
