The most successful Associate Buyers are those who are driven, tenacious, outgoing, and whose passion for business is equaled by their enthusiasm for home décor. Members of the buying team must be expert multi-taskers and have an acute focus on detail, in addition to having a great eye for home fashion and furnishings. A typical day includes planning events in multiple categories with your team and Senior Buyer, negotiating product pricing and inventory levels with suppliers, analyzing event- and category-level metrics to inform future decisions, and working closely with other Joss & Main teams to bring events to fruition. On any given day, you will work with members of the Copy team (who write the events), Creative team (who create the imagery for the events), Merchandising team (who create the event online), and Operations team (who handle all logistics and order issues). These teams are essential to creating our events and ensuring that they run smoothly and profitably. Understanding how each of these teams work will ensure that your events run like a carefully crafted machine.
As an Associate Buyer, you are a consummate and self-driven learner. You have an insatiable need to understand how things work, coupled with an insatiable desire to improve the performance of your events. Each event category runs like a mini-business. Buying teams are tight-knit, collaborative and entrepreneurial in spirit. As a result, teams enjoy a real sense of ownership over their category. The ability to work well in a team, and work until the job is done, is a hallmark of top Associate Buyers that will go on to become business leaders at Joss & Main and Wayfair.
Forge and expand strong supplier partnerships
Negotiate buying terms with suppliers (selection, price, quantity, and delivery terms) and develop pipeline of sales events
Plan, manage and produce a number of sales events per week to revenue and profitability targets
Collaborate with Merchandising/Event Production team to maximize sell through and item velocity
Attend trade shows and exhibits, conduct buying trips on a regular basis
Maintain industry expertise; keep abreast of trends and new product ideas
Analyze event performance data to determine areas of improvement and report on event and category performance periodically
Analyze competitor marketing and pricing
Travel to trade shows with Senior Buyers (2-4 trips per year)
Collaborate frequently with other Joss & Main departments (Copy, Creative, Merchandising, Operations) in order to drive revenue and profits
Articulate, persuasive communicator with strong negotiating skills
B.A. with top academic results from a highly selective institution
