KXTV-TV, the Gannett-owned ABC affiliate in Sacramento, California, is searching for a highly-motivated, versatile journalist and leader to strategically lead and manage KXTV's Information Center. The successful candidate is smart, bold, creative, and capable of producing unique and excellent content on multiple platforms. The News Director must have a broad range of experience with television and online news products and be able to identify, develop, motivate and inspire staff. Position reports to President and General Manager. News, weather and sports content and products on all of our platforms. Developing and executing strategies for reaching newscast ratings and online traffic goals. Working closely with the General Manager and department heads to reach station goals. Fully participating in strategic planning process. Creating an open, positive work environment where different viewpoints are valued and everyone is treated with respect. Building and growing an energetic, skilled, focused and innovative team. Placing employees into appropriate positions and helping them reach their full potential. Hiring, coaching and training staff members. Clearly and consistently communicating standards, expectations and goals. Developing and presenting a focused vision for news staff. Insuring that news staff abides by company and station guidelines and policies. Planning, prioritizing and maximizing available resources. Developing and overseeing the department's operational budget. Understanding community issues and addressing them via newscasts and special programs. Having a good understanding of legal matters pertaining to news content, providing guidance to staff, and working well with legal advisors as needed. Completing necessary reports and projects in a timely manner. Developing relationships with third parties to plan and implement successful content sharing partnerships.
Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism with 3-5 years of management experience in a related field. Demonstrated innovative leadership, communication, and staff development skills. Solid journalistic judgment and a news philosophy that emphasizes quality and unique content. Strong ethical standards and integrity are a must. Must be quick and decisive but open to different viewpoints and approaches.
