Director of Payroll
This is a regular, full-time, exempt, supervisory position. This position is eligible for our full suite of employee benefits, including medical, dental and vision coverage, generous 401 (k) plan, commuter programs, and continuing education assistance.
Directs the payroll functions for multiple legal entities and payroll cycles. Designs, develops and implements internal policies and systems ensuring accuracy and compliance with government guidelines and laws. Identifies payroll processing and system issues and makes recommendations for improvements to Controller. Manages staff that provide timely and accurate payroll processing. Oversees the coordination with Accounting Staff to ensure payroll expenses are recorded correctly, reconciled to the payroll subsystem, and that financial audit requirements are satisfied. Provides subject matter expertise on wage and tax data and information and develops processes to ensure that data is correct for tax return preparation and filing. Leads an organization that provides customers a high level of service.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related business field required. Master’s degree preferred.
Seven years payroll experience in a large multiple entity employer with various EINs and payroll cycles, 5 years managerial experience.
Experience with multiple legal entities, various payroll cycles, complicated pay practices associated with contractual arrangements, high-volume customer calls, in-house system generated payrolls and online time-keeping. Working knowledge of basic payroll procedures, including internal controls, reconciliations, tax reporting requirements, and benefit plan and financial statement audit procedures. Ability to manage, set priorities, and train staff functioning in a high volume environment. Ability to develop good working relationships with customers, department supervisors, and other departments such as Human Resources, Information Technology and Accounting.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Knowledge of on-line time keeping and in-house payroll processing systems, as well as tax filings. Knowledge of basic accounting principles (debit/credit, accruals, liability vs. expense) and accountability for reconciliations. Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.
