The Flight Nurse functions as a member of the critical care transport team and is responsible for the care of critically ill or injured patients transported by the STAT MedEvac system. Responsibilities include patient care incorporating assessment, stabilization, and intervention techniques consistent with standards and protocols approved by the Medical Director. The Flight Nurse is expected to execute independent judgment in order to deliver appropriate care that is consistent with the clinical protocols, when contact with a medical command physician is not possible. The Flight Nurse functions as a part of a team and shares responsibility for the team's conduct. The Flight Nurse fulfills education and experiential requirements as established by the STAT MedEvac Medical Director, and performs other duties as assigned. Supports and upholds the mission, goals, and objectives, of the STAT MedEvac system at all times. These positions will not be available until August of 2013. Applicants to this position will cover the following bases: MedEvac 6 - Clarion, MedEvac 9 - Clearfield, MedEvac 11 - Altoona, MedEvac 16 - Kittanning.

Responsibilities

- Demonstrates skills, competencies, and judgment necessary to provide patient care in any
environment; using educational resources that are required or made available
- Demonstrates competency related to pharmacological interventions
- Provide advanced critical care life support to critically ill or injured patients in adherence with
established protocols and standards of care; assessing online medical command or other
resources when appropriate. Participates in developing and completing research projects
- Ensures patient and family confidentiality and dignity at all times
- Function as a clinical resource for all new and junior STAT MedEvac team members and
University of Pittsburgh Emergency Medicine Resident Physicians. Actively participates in the
development and training of new staff
- Documents appropriate assessment, interventions, and other pertinent patient information in a t
timely manner. Collects and promptly processes demographic, medical necessity, and other
necessary billing information
- Participates constructively in the peer-review driven quality improvement program
- Adheres to uniform policy by utilizing the approved flight suit, jacket, vest, hat, boots, gloves,
and T-shirts (undergarments)
- Performs all assigned duties, including daily, weekly, monthly, or other duties assigned by the
base site manager, including (but not limited to): Performs daily equipment check (aircraft,
medications, blood), Ensures crew is logged onto computer duty roster, Participates in shift
report from off going crew, Equipment checks, Transport log, Blood log, Medication log, Maintains
clean patient environment as well as crew quarters
- Responds promptly and efficiently to all requests for service (air and ground)
- Demonstrates proficiency of operation in all STAT MedEvac airframes to include radio
operations and Safety Officer function where applicable
- Ensures safe operation of patient laden stretcher employing appropriate stretcher discipline at all
times with a patient laden aircraft or ground unit. Maintains safe loading, unloading, adjustment
of head of stretcher, and stretcher movement
- Participates in post flight debriefing in a positive and constructive manner
- Completes all official documentation in a timely manner such as payroll, expense reports,
orientation forms, etc
- Adheres to rules for scheduling, including schedule requests, minimum time, and availability
- Participates constructively in daily safety briefs and maintains annual aircrew training/CTS,
including proficiency with NVGs, IIMC and other emergency procedures
- Ensures the safety of patients and all others functioning in and around the aircraft. Utilizes
appropriate safety channels to report safety concerns, and uses tools available to enhance a
safe work environment
- Reflects a positive attitude to the customer in a high stress environment at all times, with a clear
understanding of who the customer is
- Demonstrates the ability to establish a rapport with customers; including the ability to create and
sustain a positive relationship; regardless of circumstances, environment, or patient
presentation. This includes site visits and other outreach events such as bike rodeos,
conferences, etc
- Maintains fitness for duty by adhering to all employee health requirements, including maximum
weight, hearing conservation program, and required medical screenings. Reports injuries and
completes the appropriate documentation, no matter how minor, to a supervisor in a timely
manner
- Selects and uses personal protective equipment appropriate to the level of the anticipated
hazard, including, but not limited to: Universal Precautions, Helmet, Hearing protection, including
ear plugs and/or active noise reduction (ANR) system, Face shields used at appropriate times,
Flight suit, Leather boots, and Flight gloves
- Reports for work well rested, and fit for duty. Adhering to the drug and alcohol policy at all t
times including prescription and/or over the counter medicine use

Basic Qualifications

- Three years clinical experience in critical care and/or emergency department
- Successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam that includes a maximum height/weight
restriction of 6'2" and less than or equal to 210 pounds, fitness for duty physical exam, and hearing
evaluation
- Must be eligible to receive medical command authorization by the Medical Director, have reliable
transportation, and be willing to travel to any STAT MedEvac base site as assigned
- Must be able to successfully complete the prescribed orientation program, including classroom, c
clinical rotations, educational competencies, and on the job flight training
- Must have the ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle
multiple/changing priorities, and specialized equipment

Licensure/Certifications

- Pre Hospital Registered Nurse
- Registered Nurse
- Pennsylvania registered nurse (RN)
- License as a registered nurse in required state based upon primary base assignment
- Pennsylvania Department of Health certification as a Prehospital Registered Nurse (PHRN) or
Paramedic
- CFRN Certification required within two (2) years of date of hire
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
- International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) or its equivalent
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
- Healthcare Provider Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
- Valid and current USA passport
- Valid and current state driver's license
