Turbine, Inc. seeks a Systems Administrator - Web Operations for our growing Technical Operations department.

The Systems Engineer - Web Operations position is responsible for building, maintaining, and supporting the large web infrastructure that supports much of the WB Games web site and online games. This position reports to the Director of Operations and will work alongside web operations, game operations, and system administrators to ensure the deployment and management of the web and game properties is streamlined, predictable, and automated.

The desired candidate has an attention to detail that enables consistent web infrastructure configuration, predictable infrastructure performance, and seeks to automate tasks and procedures that are repetitious.


Build and maintain Turbine's web hosting infrastructure.

Build and maintain deploy systems for one-button iterative development.

Build and maintain configuration management tools (Chef and Puppet).

Enable improved uptime and scalability through development of processes, high availability infrastructure, and automation.

Troubleshoot issues with hardware, software, applications, and network.

Continually document, expose, and improve configuration processes and policies.

Performing daily support tasks such as but not limited to management of backups, creating virtual servers, source control and CMS permissions, live debugging, code deployment.

Support the senior operations staff and their project based work.

Tightly cooperate and collaborate with development, product, community, and customer care staff.

Take part in a 24x7 on-call rotation.


BS in Computer Science or related field.

Minimum of 3 years work experience in web development and/or web operations teams support LAMP based web sites.

Experience building and supporting large scale high volume web sites.

Overall, you prefer automation over repetition.

You have documented experience building Linux systems (RHEL, Centos , Ubuntu) and have a solid knowledge of Linux commands.

You have experience with configuration management technologies and concepts (Chef, Puppet, Cfengine, etc.) and understand their benefit.

You have the ability to write basic scripts.

You have worked in a web application environment supporting deployments of web properties.

You have experience deploying and managing multiple CMS systems.

You have familiarity with code repository software (Perforce, Git).

You have hands on experience with the basic management of core operations systems such as but not limited to DNS, LDAP, NTP.

You have a solid understanding of web application architecture, including TCP/IP and HTTP.

You have experience working with Virtual machines (VMware, KVM, Xen).

You must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Experience in a "continuous deployment" environment.
  • Experience in social networking or community-generated content.
  • Hands on experience with server build automation.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Ruby, Python, PHP, Java.
  • Hands on experience with PCI compliance issues.
  • Experience with mission-critical search and real time database architectures (Solr, Lucene, MySQL, Mongodb, Postgres, etc.).
  • An understanding of caching strategies for web sites with worldwide use.
  • Experience with Content Delivery Networks.
  • Ability to create, customize, manage network management systems and monitoring tools (Splunk, Nagios, Ganglia, Graphite, Cacti, etc.).
