Role Description – Fall COOP
Assignment Length – 6 month assignment (01-07-2013 through 07-05-2013)
Purpose and Contents of the Role
The internship/coop role provides students with the opportunity to apply academic knowledge and skills in a professional environment, and to support/promote the graduate's career goals through contact with professionals in their field of study. The internship experience enables students to participate in professional activities for Volvo Powertrain by working on important and innovative projects. Internships are structured learning experiences where interns/coops and our full time professionals work together on projects within their selected organization. The internship allows students to integrate knowledge and skills in a manner that is mutually beneficial to the student and Volvo Powertrain.
Responsibilities / Main tasks
This position will require collaboration with multiple functions throughout our Powertrain Operation. The student will be paired with our full time professionals for a thorough successful COOP experience. The student will study the applicable theory behind the area of lean needed to deploy. The assignment will require mentoring directly under the Maintenance Managers for guidance and efficient deployment of principles and tools within the Volvo Production System toolbox. The scope of projects will vary from Standard Kaizen (1 month or less) to Major Kaizen (3 months) and various systematic problems solving tools to create innovative solutions designed at targeted waste reduction within our manufacturing process.
The contribution made by the student will be real life, important and innovative projects that will affect the results of Powertrain Operations as a whole. The “hands on” experience is targeted to provide the student with real life partitioning of lean principles.
Essential Skills and Needed Experience
Personal Qualifications · Customer Focus
- Entering sophomore year class standing or higher; MBA students also encouraged to apply
- History of academic achievement: GPA of 3.0 or higher preferred
- Participation in school or extracurricular activities and experience in leadership roles
