District Manager (DM) - Job Accountability

DM Summary

This position leads a complex, high volume district of Gap Brand stores. A district consists of stores that vary in complexity (sales, sub brand mix, single and multi-store environments). In a standard district the District Manager (DM) is responsible for building and retaining a high-performing and diverse workforce of Store Management within the District as well as contributing management talent to Gap's overall talent pipeline. The DM is responsible for articulating and executing the Gap Brand vision and strategy to the district team in a manner consistent with Gap Inc.'s Employee Guidelines. The DM leads the district team to meet sales budgets, customer service goals, and Operating and People objectives through execution, coaching and accountability. The District Manager is accountable for representing the brands within the Gap business landscape, understanding our competitors and their operations as well as supporting excellent tenant and community relationships. The DM acts as an advocate for the field and a brand ambassador within the Gap Brand organization and the external marketplace. The DM is responsible for leveraging the expertise of cross-functional business partners to achieve business goals.

Leadership and Employee Results (30%)

Communicates clear expectations and holds District team and self-accountable to all Gap Brand standards of performance and behavior.

Responsible for ensuring strong business acumen across all levels of leadership.

Identifies, develops and leverages existing talent to support the growth of the District through the talent planning process.

Drives future growth of Gap Brand through effective recruitment, selection and on boarding of field management positions (General Managers and below)

Ensures all stores achieve optimal staffing levels and provide a quality on-boarding experience for all associates.

Recognizes and rewards behaviors that are in alignment and support Gap Inc.'s Employee Guidelines to promote a high-performance team.

Maximizes store team performance through consistent and effective coaching and feedback. Drives the Company's performance management processes throughout the district.

Partners with Regional Director to create individual development plans that support performance needs and career growth for direct reports.

Implements and monitors district compensation strategy and focal processes.

Resolves escalated Employee Relations, performance and customer service issues in partnership with the RD, Human Resources Manager and Employee Relations representative.

Cultivates a collaborative learning environment within the District by modeling Purpose, Values and Behaviors.

Fosters cross-district and cross-divisional relationships to support Division and Company strategies.

Business and Financial Results (25%)

Achieves District sales budget.

Achieves District financial and expense targets.

Provides education and direction to District team to ensure financial goals are met.

Provides input to Regional director for field budgeting process (sales, payroll, travel).

Partners with Loss Prevention department to identify trends and translate regional strategy into action to meet District shrink goals.

Effectively utilizes reports to analyze and impact business trends for District stores.

Management and Operating Results (20%)

Supports Gap Brand initiatives and ensures successful implementation and sustainability within the District.

Drives consistent execution of Gap Brand direction while identifying district specific opportunities.

Models and manages effective supervision to drive sales by consistently delivering exceptional customer service in a beautiful and immaculate store.

Provides Visual presentation direction and training to all district management.

Provides feedback and recommendations to key Head Quarter partners and Regional Director on key field initiatives and projects.

Assists in developing content for special projects as needed.

Responds and reacts to all communication in a timely manner.

Customer and Market Results (20%)

Educates District how to create a delightful customer experience within the store environment using the Regional strategy.

Provides recommendations to Regional director for existing and new growth opportunities and market insights.

Partner with Regional Director to influence future Divisional growth strategies.

Assesses customer feedback tools and develops action plans for improvement.

Understands the competitive retail landscape within the District and communicates opportunities.

Promotes district involvement in Gap in Action community program.

Administrative (5%)

Performs and delegates non-revenue generating tasks as required such as travel arrangements, expenses, etc.

Overnight travel required, may include occasional weekend travel.


Minimum 5 years retail experience, Gap Inc. experience preferred.

Strong emphasis/experience in the store operations function and/or customer service industry.

Ability to travel, including overnight as required.

Ability to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the business, including nights and weekends.

Ability to lift and carry 30lbs.

Regular attendance is an essential function of the job.

4-year college degree or equivalent preferred.
