Job Description:
The Naval Reactors Facility (NRF) is seeking engineers
for a Department of Energy (DOE) Major Construction
Project (MCP) to replace aging infrastructure for spent
nuclear fuel handling. The successful candidates will
participate as members of an Integrated Product Team
(IPT) that includes team members from Bettis-Pittsburgh,
KAPL, and BPMI. The manager of the IPT may be located at
KAPL or Bettis. The IPT members are responsible for the
conceptual design through installation and testing of
equipment to be used in a new Spent Fuel Handling
Facility. This work effort is at the ground floor and
the successful applicants will be part of the team that
will be positioning the Naval Reactors program for
continued success for the next 50 years.

Senior/Principal:Essential Duties for the Senior Engineer:
  • Delegated broad engineering responsibility for all
aspects of assigned tasks with limited direction.
  • Interface with other program organizations to
accomplish objectives.
  • Provide technical support and oversight for field
operations.
  • Team with and provide technical leadership for the
technical effort of other personnel performing
related phases of the technical program.
  • Apply knowledge of NAVSEA requirements to work
assignments.
  • Participate in standing technical committees.
  • Provide proactive leadership for area of cognizance
to address legacy issues, develop process
improvements, or maintain historical knowledge.
  • Perform work planning to accomplish major projects
to meet project and scheduler requirements. Align
resources, identify risks, prepare mitigation plans
to meet major milestones.
  • Prepare cost and schedule estimates, and performance
measures.
  • Communicate as necessary to ensure customer and
senior manager understanding of project status.
  • Perform analytical evaluations which may include the
development and application of complex computer
models.
  • Apply system knowledge to technical and operational
problem solving.
  • Prepare and support coordination of revisions to
technical manuals. Issue technical reports and
recommendations.
  • Ensure documentation is in accordance with NR
program quality standards.
  • Initiate, coordinate, design, develop, and implement
engineering research and design projects.
  • Understand and implement the BMPC engineering
policies and procedures in area of cognizance and
related work.
  • Obtain and retain necessary qualifications to
perform assigned duties.

Specific Duties may include:
  • Mechanical design of processing equipment which
includes preparation of design recommendations,
development of functional requirements, design,
drawings, alignment/tolerances studies, safety
reports, testing, manufacturing of production
components, generation of operating procedures and
in-service operations.
  • Development of facility systems functional
requirements.
  • Issuance of technical submittals to the customer.
  • Seismic and/or structural analysis of equipment.
  • Interface and coordinate with several support
functions (e.g., planning, procurement, drafting,
shielding, thermal and nuclear) as well as with
other IPTs.
Essential duties for the Principal Engineer are
available from NRF HR.

Job Requirements:Senior:
  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
from an accredited college or university and a
minimum of six years of mechanical design or
Expended Core Facility (in-house applicants) is
required for the Senior Engineer; or
  • MS degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
from an accredited college or university and a
minimum of four years of mechanical design or
Expended Core Facility (in-house applicants)
experience is required.

Principal:
  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
from an accredited college or university and a
minimum of nine years of mechanical design or
Expended Core Facility (in-house applicants) is
required for the Principal Engineer; or
  • MS degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
from an accredited college or university and a
minimum of seven years of experience.
ECF experience is required for the in-house
Senior/Principal Engineer. Effective oral and written
communications is desired along with good teaming
skills. Experience in design of processing equipment,
seismic and/or structural analysis, and familiarity with
radiological control requirements is preferred.
