Description

Responsibilities of the Generator Diagnostic Engineer include but not limited to the diagnostic testing, monitoring and inspection for condition assessment of rotating electrical equipment serviced by Alstom Power Service in Richmond VA. His or her tasks will include on-line diagnostic testing and monitoring of rotating electrical equipment and off-line tests and inspections as required in accordance with company policies and procedures. The position also plays a supporting role for operational departments (Turbine / Generator Controls, Plant Monitoring, Diagnostic Operations). The Generator Diagnostic Engineer reports to the Monitoring and Diagnostics Manager in Power Automations &Controls.

Conduct on-line and off-line partial discharge measurements.

Analyze PD measurement results and complete assessment reports.

Conduct rotor shaft voltage and flux probe measurements on-line, analyze and report results.

Set up and competently operate diagnostic and test equipment such as AC/DC HIPOT, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzer, winding insulation quality tests, ultrasonic localization equipment, partial discharge measurement and monitoring equipment, DIRIS

®

equipment, WIDIPRO

®

equipment, and ELCID

®

equipment.

Requires above average knowledge of design, function and operation of rotating electrical equipment specifically large generators and motors including effects of TEAM stresses.

Ability to effectively communicate and deal with different customers and their needs.

Demonstrates technical leadership in dealings with customers.

Familiarity with technical drawings relating to rotating electrical equipment.

Occasional support of an inspection and generator repair in the field may be required.

Work with Generator Engineering, providing technical solutions, resolving generator issues.

Set up, install, and commission AMODIS

®

monitoring satellites, PAMOS

®

, ROMON

®

, RFM and VIC at the customer site.

Frequent travel required.

Qualifications

Education

BS in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or 10 years equivalent work experience

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

7 years in turbine generator engineering or field service

Experience in component design and performance. Personal experience is extremely important.

Knowledge of HV components and electrical power distribution.

Experience with data acquisition devices from National Instruments or similar vendors

Knowledge of programming languages, such as C, VB, and Labview, is a plus

General understanding of industrial communication protocols

Good interpersonal skills. Self-starter operates with minimal instruction.

Strong organization and communication skills (written and verbal)

Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite

PC skills (spreadsheet, database, etc.), CAD exposure preferred.

Some construction (field) experience preferred.

Fluent in English. German or Spanish is preferred 2

language.

Must be a team player and people oriented.

Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
