The incumbent practices as an Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP) in Primary Care Service, at the Alaska VA Healthcare System (AVAHS), Anchorage, AK. The Primary Care Service provides outpatient care to eligible Veteran patients who present with urgent/chronic medical conditions, changes in mental status and/or functional decline. The ANP functions as an independent member of the Medical Staff with delinieated clinical privileges granted by the Medical Executive Board. The ANP is a member of an interdisciplinary team providing primary care for patients. This includes assessment of risk factors; performing histories and physicials; ordering diagnostic and therapeutic tests and studies; initiating consults and referrals; prescribing medications and supplies in accordance with DVA policy, formulary and state regulations; seeking consultation with physicians whenever cases are outside of the scope of practice; communicting relevant patient data in case presentations and medical records; formulating initiating and evaluating health care teaching to patients and families; facilitating communication related to patients with personnel responsible for their clinical services; and acting as a consultant to nursing and medical staff.


Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.

Education: Graduate of a school or professional nursing approved by the appropriate State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed. In addition, the applicant must possess a Master's in Nursing from a college/university accredited by theNational League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). [In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration (licensure) will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.]

Experience: Experience will be considered by the Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary. These requirements are based on the American Nurses Association (ANA) Standards of Care and Standards of Professional Performance.

Registration/Licensure: A current, full, active and unrestrictive registration/licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia, and must maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the ANA or another nationally recognized certifying body.

Certification: Certification as an Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner.
