Summary: Monitors, records and evaluates complex data and information related to geothermal well drilling with an emphasis on geological information using a range of equipment and techniques by performing the following duties personally or through subordinates.

Responsible for Company equipment placed in service at the drill site. At various times, will install, calibrate, maintain, repair and remove such equipment. Equipment varies by job and customer but may include a real time data acquisition system, computers and computer networking equipment, gas monitors, sensors, sampling hardware, chemical pumps and safety equipment.
Accurately and reliably records both routine data and notable events based on knowledgeable about various drilling processes and procedures; such as accurate tracking of well and bit depth, monitoring and recording a wide variety of drilling characteristics, the ability to identify and quantify circulating fluid losses or gains from the well and the ability to recognize and characterize geofluid entries into the well.
Examines and analyzes solid materials recovered from the well bore. These materials may be natural or manmade. Collects samples at the appropriate time, processes the samples for examination and storage, determines the type of rock present and identifies and characterizes secondary effects on the rock such as hydrothermal mineralization or alteration and evidence of fracturing and other permeability.
May be called upon to assist the Site Geologist assigned to the site in supplemental activities such as core collection and analysis and water sampling.
Combines data from various sources, interprets and summarizes the findings in order to advise the customer on drilling operations such as the selection of casing points, optimum drilling rates or other rig and drilling parameters.
Employs a binocular microscope in sample examination; uses a variety of chemical test methods to conduct hardness testing and mineral evaluations.
Prepares the Mud Log, a document that contains information relating to the geological, engineering and drilling characteristics of the well, by entering pertinent data into a database and edits the Mud Log for accuracy, completeness, consistency and neatness.
When the drilling technology in use allows geofluid to vent to the atmosphere either during or after drilling, the mud logger is responsible for collecting samples of the fluid and determining the hydrogen sulfide gas content and steam flow rate using various analytical techniques. May also be responsible for supervising a well deliverability test.
Where a requirement exists in a geothermal field to limit emissions of hydrogen sulfide gas to the atmosphere by abating the excess emissions, in addition to the hydrogen sulfide testing mentioned above, the mud logger is responsible for determining the hydrogen sulfide emission rate, calculating chemical dosing rates, keeping accurate records for regulatory purposes, operating the hydrogen sulfide abatement pumping unit and managing the abatement chemical inventory.
Serves a significant role in safety of site personnel by monitoring for various potentially dangerous gases that can emanate from the well; including the monitoring of equipment mentioned above as well as hand-held devices the logger uses to personally inspect areas at the site.
Applies the proper use and care of respirators, conducts breathing respirator fit tests and trains other personnel in respirator use; teaches other site personnel about hydrogen sulfide safety; recognizes potentially hazardous situations that are encountered during well operations and advises the customer regarding these hazards.
Responsible for various levels of reporting and communications. Communicates effectively with site personnel in order to assemble the relevant data needed to characterize certain well events, such as a lost circulation event.
Regularly communicates, both verbally and in writing, with the customer’s representative on site and the company geologist to discuss various aspects of the drilling operation or well geology.
Authors a daily report which summarizes geology, physical measurements, well activities and cost; certain well events such as steam flow tests and BOP tests require the submission of a report.
Advises customer in areas where incumbent has particular expertise such as how to successfully drill through a particular type of rock.
