This position requires a hands on Director who will have no personal deliverables; however be able to step in and provide guidance for challenging design tasks.We are on Retainer to fill this backfill position quickly. Position Summary:Director, Electrical Engineering: Your duties and responsibilities will include, but not be limited to: Direct the Electrical Engineering small autonomous team including one remote engineer to provide working control and power conversion equipment. Lead the work of engineers, technicians, consultants, vendors, and suppliers during the performance of contracts for delivery of complete equipment for data acquisition, power conversion, and control, as well as supporting software. Develop system specifications, architecture, functional partitioning, both for hardware and for software for mechanical to electrical power conversion systems. Develop and design motion servo controls to translate from a mechanical renewable energy source into electrical power Develop analytical models of power generation system that includes generators, motor drives, distribution and energy storage equipment, actuators, sensors, controllers and electro-mechanical systems Develop software algorithms to optimize the performance of the energy conversion systems and protect it during normal and fault conditions Prepare detailed design plans for integration of electrical and electronics systems and its software Design mechanical aspects of electrical systems including component arrangements, cooling and heat flow mechanisms or provisions, enclosures, maintenance provisions, interconnects, and cable and wire routing and support. Oversee work by the Mechanical Engineering group to document these designs. Develop complete and thorough test plans for all electrical systems and coordinate testing of subsystems and completed systems in support of projects and contracts. Perform technical design reviews Participate in high level customer interface, presentation, and proposal efforts Prepare and review project electrical engineering and design budgets and schedules.
Required Skills: Minimum Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering – Prefer MSEE or Phd Must be a US Citizen (Green card OK) 5+ years recent management exp leading small design teams working with tight deadlines. Must be able to motivate a team to meet delivery dates. 5+ years design exp with electro mechanical systems Must be highly skilled in high power electrical systems Must be highly skilled in soft/hardware control systems like PLCs / controllers and their appropriate software systems Must have design exp with large machinery (Ex - automation equipment) or Machine systems such as using elements of the above to do the power side of moving machinery or automated systems Must have knowledge of motors / generators – must have motor design exp. Must have exp with Motor control / drive equipment such as variable frequency drives Must have exp with Power storage systems such as batteries and super capacitors Must have exp with Transformers and high power filter systems 400V AC through 26kV AC and possibly higher Must have exp with Transmission systems (13kV to 26kV or higher) Must have an understanding of transmitting power at high voltage over distances of multiple km. Must have exp with grid tied inverters / active front end devices such as to connect generators to a utility grid and deal with UL1741 requirements Exp with high voltage DC (say 1000V) to 3 phase AC. Desired Skills: Prefer MSEE or Phd in EE Desire exp moving a team from an R & D mentality to a commercial environment (go from prototyping to build for manufacturing) Exp working with military customers – such as the Navy Exp within the renewable energy industry highly desired Desire exp with high power automation systems, factory production systems, utility company generators, or electric vehicles.
