The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) seeks a Writer III to serve as the senior supervising writer on the Science Press Package (SciPak) team within the AAAS Office of Public Programs.
Major duties and responsibilities:
Supervises a Senior Communications Officer, a Communications Officer, three Communications Associates and two Writers
Writes Science Press Package summaries, requiring a high level of science-writing skill
Prepares approximately half of the weekly Science Press Package
Translates technical Science content into compelling, accurate, accessible lay summaries for registered reporters each week
Oversees the management of strategic partnerships with designated media allies
Communicates frequently with journal editors about technical and/or procedural matters
Serves as the team’s primary liaison whenever matters require interaction with the Public Programs Director, Science Editor-in-Chief, Executive Editor, International Managing Editor, Deputy Editors, CEO, authors, public information officers or reporters; This encompasses management of the journal’s embargo policy, in concert with the OPP Director
Handles additional science-related and other writing assignments and special projects as needed
Minimum qualifications:
Extensive university or college-level training leading to a Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in a science-related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Five to ten years of experience as a science writer, reporter or editor handling very technical content, on deadline, to include supervisory experience
Highest level of science-writing ability, including a proven track record in translating large amounts of very technical content into compelling, accurate, accessible lay language, on tight deadlines and on a constant rolling (weekly) basis
Ability to identify newsworthy material through research, reporting and review
Ability to credibly and authoritatively discuss highly scientific or technical topics with Science editors, reporters and others
