About the Unit

As the art museum of the University of Chicago, the Smart Museum of Art takes a distinctly interdisciplinary approach to the collection, display, and interpretation of art. Founded in 1974, the Smart is home to acclaimed special exhibitions and a permanent collection that spans five thousand years of artistic creation. Working in close collaboration with scholars from the University of Chicago, the Smart has established itself as a leading academic art museum and an engine of adventurous thinking about the visual arts and their place in society.

Unit Job Summary

Associate Programs Manager: Reporting to the Director of Education and Interpretation, this position is responsible for managing the Smart Museum's education programs for families and university students. Collaborates with the Director of Education as needed to design, implement, and evaluate public programs for adults. This is a full time position within the Smart Museum's Education department.

Education

Master's degree in Museum or Art Education, Fine Art, Art History, or related field preferred.

Experience

Experience in one or more of the following areas: museum education (including public and community programs and interpretation), teaching visual art, and/or educating children and families strongly preferred.

A minimum of one year relevant work experience preferred.

Competencies

Knowledge of current best practices regarding the interpretation of art for varied publics required.

Strong communication skills, and ability to interact effectively with public audiences including children, parents, and university students, as well as interdepartmentally required.

Strong research, writing, and editing skills required.

Strong computer skills and basic office computing skills required required.

Proficiency in graphics programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator is desirable required.

Strong organizational, planning, problem solving and project management skills required.

Willingness and ability to travel and work some evenings and weekends required.

Demonstrated success in building collaborative relationships with diverse constituencies preferred.
