This series includes positions that involve performing, supervising or directing routine as well as advanced non-standardized technical laboratory work that supports biological, chemical or food science research (in such areas as health and nutrition, food, meat and flavors). Employees may perform laboratory work in any one or a combination of these areas. They set up and conduct both original and standard experiments and perform both quantitative and qualitative analyses related to the evaluation and development of materials and techniques as defined by the designated research program. The work requires the exercise of a high degree of professional judgement such that employees designate valid data and determine causes for irregular findings. The work requires full professional training in o
Employees in positions at this level of the series are entry-level professional research technologists who conduct experiments in the development or analysis of materials and techniques as defined by the specific research program. The work involves the application of standard tests and procedures, although employees, at times and with appropriate supervision, may adapt procedures to apply to new or unusual situations. They work under general supervision.
Primary Responsibilities:Typical duties of a Technologist include:
Perform a wide variety of standard tests and procedures, including quantitative and qualitative analyses, aimed at identifying foreign substances and organisms, their chemical relationships and scientific potential
With detailed instructions covering the specific methodology, set up and conduct new or modified tests and experiments with responsibility for locating and reporting test deficiencies
Apply appropriate quality controls to insure validity and reliability of results; identify results that exceed recommended or desired tolerances
Maintain exact mathematical records of test results; prepare statistical charts reflecting test ratios, distribution and progression curves, and other data; may feed data into computer for more refined analysis
Review technical literature, write research reports; make tentative conclusions
Demonstrate laboratory and/or specific research techniques and procedures to other personnel
Maintain and enhance site safety
May supervise lower level laboratory personnel in the maintenance and preparation of laboratory materials and equipment
Bachelors Degree in Biological, Chemical, Food Science or related field
Two (2) years of closely related experience may substitute for education. No on-the-job experience is required for the position
Knowledge of (1) Theories, principles, methods and procedures of applicable field of science (Basic level); (2) Mathematics and statistics (Basic level); (3) Basic analytical laboratory equipment; (4) MS Office package
Skills to collect, process and record research data accurately.
Ability to (1) Develop solutions to routine research procedural problems; (2) Maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards; (3) Operate and maintain laboratory equipment; (4) Communicate effectively orally and in writing (including documenting research methods, results and conclusions); (5) Learn and begin to execute Six Sigma methodology; (6) Work independently and/or among a team and exercise judgment
