In an effort to attract, develop and retain talented employees to the organization, the City of Tacoma is hiring for the Tacoma Management Internship Program that will begin June 2013. About the Program
The City of Tacoma Management Intern Program, formerly known as the Management Fellowship, is a nationally recognized program that has been training future municipal leaders since 2006.

The program is designed to attract, develop and retain talented individuals with an interest in a local government management career. This program gives selected participants the opportunity to observe firsthand the efforts of a mid-sized city government working to resolve some of its most pressing issues. Our program is unparalleled in terms of the opportunities participants will have to meet and network with executives and managers. Successful participants are highly recruited by departments to fill available city jobs, and many of our top-level executives began their career with the city in this program.

Our full-time program is similar to an 18-month, paid fellowship with each intern spending 6 months in each of the following departments: City Manager’s Office, Office of Management & Budget and one operating department. The current recruitment is open to talented individuals holding a master’s degree or those who will satisfactorily complete all coursework for a master’s degree by June 2013. City employees are encouraged to apply.

Wide Range of Experiences
If selected, you will learn about every facet of a mid-sized, urban, complex city operation from the ground up. During this exciting, and fast-paced 18 months, you will: Work on a variety of assignments and projects that affect our community of 200,000 residents. Gain exposure to innovative best practices in our award-winning organization through your 3 six-month rotations in the City Manager’s Office, Office of Management & Budget and an operating department that provides direct service to the community. Participate in the process of setting city policy by staffing City Council meetings. Use research and writing skills by studying an issue, recommending solutions and drafting a management report. Work directly with residents and city staff on service delivery to the public. Some of the projects completed by past participants include:

Upon completion of the 18-month program, City Staff will work with each successful Management Intern to explore full-time position opportunities, within the organization, that matches the individual's career interests.

Master's degree in Public Administration or satisfactory completion of all class work for a master’s degree in public administration prior to taking this position. You are eligible to apply if you still need to complete an internship, thesis, or comprehensive exam, as long as all coursework has been completed.
