Job Posting Summary
This recruitment is to hire two qualified candidates for position of QMED electrician. Under general supervision of the Chief Engineer, the QMED electrician of the R/V Sikuliaq will assist in the engineering department of the global class, ice-capable oceanographic research vessel's propulsion and power plant machinery including all scientific and auxiliary machinery equipment. It is operated by a diesel electric propulsion system utilizing an integrated power plant concept providing 5,750 bhp of propulsion power through frequency drives and a/c main motors to two fully azimuthing z-drives. The R/V SIKULIAQ is operated by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Seward Marine Center home port in Seward, Alaska, owned by NSF and a member of the National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS). Knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position.
Strong skills as a marine electrician, especially in the area of trouble shooting, new installations, and upkeep of existing equipment; ability to read blue prints and electrical/electronic equipment on board with the ability to make changes as required; experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and electronic controls; knowledge of variable frequency drives; knowledge of electrical safe practices and safety. Requires strong interpersonal and communication skills with diverse ship board personnel.
Typical education or training required for this position (including licenses).
Must possess the following: U.S. Passport; U.S. Coast Guard Qualified Member Engine Department (QMED) with Electrician endorsement; IMO Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW95); Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
Length of time and type of experience required for this position.
1.5 years of experience working with shipboard electrical systems; understanding & experience with VOM, megger & amp meters; basic QMED level shipboard operational understanding; basic machine & hand tool safe use; basic math and computer skills
Preferred knowledge, skills or abilities for this position.
Knowledge of basic good seamanship practices (knots, line-handling, general shipboard maintenance and care, preparation/preservation of steel surfaces, operation of deck equipment, winches, etc.

The QMED Electrician may also perform general Oiler duties and/or those of the QMED watchstander, may stand security watches in port or other duties as directed by the Chief Engineer.
The QMED Electrician will perform other duties as defined by a ship's senior office during emergency situations and drills; facilitate and support the scientific mission of each Voyage; and comply with, participate in, and promote the vessel's safety management program.
Under general supervision of the Chief Engineer or First Engineer, the QMED Electrician will assist with installation, operation, maintenance and repair of both shipboard electrical and electronic equipment.
