The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is the data collection and dissemination arm of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. NASS gathers and publishes a vast array of information on every facet of U.S. agriculture, including production, economics, demographics, and the environment.
The incumbent in this position serves as an Information Technology Specialist (Data Management) in the Data Services Branch of the Information Technology Division. He/she will serve as a team member with primary responsibility for providing a range of technical functions relative to the administration, support, and operation of the Agency's enterprise databases.

The incumbent is responsible for a variety of duties including: Database Administration (DBA); Database software license management and installation, patch and version upgrades; Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) programs; perform quality assurance and control of the enterprise databases. He or she will be performing duties associated with centralized database platforms such as: Sybase and IBMs Red Brick on UNIX/Linux operating systems. In addition, the incumbent will be collaborating with application developers in NASS to provide advice and expertise in Database Design, Database Performance and Tuning, Metadata Standards, Database Security and Access, ETL programs and SQL query support. Moreover, the incumbent will work closely with business sponsors, team members, and UNIX/Linux staff to ensure server performance is optimized, and database environments are running well.
To qualify for the GS-12 grade level, you must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Examples of such experience would include evaluating and providing recommendations on new database technologies and architectures.
To qualify for the GS-13 grade level, you must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level. Examples of such experience would include leading various database administration functions to develop enterprise database strategies.
Time-in-grade restrictions apply for all candidates considered under Merit Promotion.

Ability to develop, test, and deploy applications and scripts to Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) data.
Knowledge of UNIX, and Linux Operating Systems.
Knowledge of Software Development Life Cycle, server side programming, and SQL.
Ability to quickly analyze problem situations, implement solutions, and provide timely responses to data users.
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing to convey instructional and technical information.
