This series includes positions that involve performing, supervising or directing routine as well as advanced non-standardized technical laboratory work that supports biological, chemical or food science research (in such areas as health and nutrition, food, meat and flavors). Employees may perform laboratory work in any one or a combination of these areas. They set up and conduct both original and standard experiments and perform both quantitative and qualitative analyses related to the evaluation and development of materials and techniques as defined by the designated research program. The work requires the exercise of a high degree of professional judgement such that employees designate valid data and determine causes for irregular findings. The work requires full professional training in one of the biological, chemical, health, nutrition and/or food sciences.
Employees in positions at this level of the series exercise a moderate degree of independence in performing assignments designed to demonstrate professional work knowledge and abilities. They conduct a wide range of specific tasks and experiments using readily available clear and direct references. Work is performed under general supervision.
Primary Responsibilities:Typical duties of a Senior Technologist include:
Set up, conduct and correlate a variety of moderately complex specific tests and experiments; evaluate the adequacy of techniques and procedures under consideration by observing pertinent reactions and comparing results to test objectives
Discuss project objectives with higher level technologists, research administrator and/or customer; recommend straightforward solutions to problems and/or revision of methodology based upon evaluation of accumulated data
Review scientific literature, abstracts and applicable method papers for possible inclusion in current or anticipated research project
Implement, monitor and evaluate appropriate quality control program based on a thorough knowledge of quality control methodology
Collect relevant mathematical results and prepare complex tables reflecting the relationship of multiple tests and their respective results
Write research reports; make tentative conclusions
Maintain and enhance site safety
May perform work related to the next lower level in this series as needed
Bachelor's Degree. Biological, Chemical, Food Science or related field. (An advanced non-thesis degree may be substituted for one (1) year of the required Experience listed below; a thesis degree for two (2) years.)
Two (2) years of professional level technologist experience as may be gained at the next lower level of this series (an advanced degree may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the required experience).
