The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is the leadership position that serves to build on and strengthen the positive and mutually supportive relationship between hospital administration and the medical staff. He/she is the chief administrative leader responsible for clinical quality within the organization. As such, the CMO works closely with both administrative staff and members of the medical staff and its leadership to maintain the high quality of medical care and to help lead the medical staff participation in furthering the mission of the organization.
The CMO is responsible for planning, organizing and directing the medical staff services for the entire organization including both acute care campuses and all outpatient facilities. The position assists the medical staff in formulating standards of care and strategic direction for quality, facilitates communication between the medical staff and administration, and ensures positive medical staff relations.
The CMO works to align medical staff goals with those of the medical center and ensures compliance with all quality, legal and regulatory requirements. The position reports to the President and Chief Executive Officer. Reporting to the CMO are the following direct reports: Director, Quality; Director, Medical Staff Services & Physician Recruitment; and Director, Infection Prevention.
MD or DO with Board Certification, along with significant management training. Preference given to candidates with Masters Degree in Business Administration or Masters in Healthcare Administration.
SPECIALIZED TRAINING REQUIRED:
Advanced training and/or experience in Medical Management, Healthcare Law, and/or Quality Improvement prefered.
Completion of physician executive leadership coursework and management skills training is expected.
LICENSE / CERTIFICATION / REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
Professional license to practice medicine in Washington State as well as active DEA number.
WA State Driver's License. Must also become a member of the medical staff.
CONTINUING EDUCATION & COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:
Required to maintain Board Certification.
Experience with designing effective clinical practice patterns and clinical protocols to decrease inappropriate utilization and/or enhance quality of outcomes. Current and up-to-date on hospital clinical quality, benchmarking and best practices.
Eight years of practice experience along with five (5) years of senior management experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
Prior experience as a Chief Medical Officer/Vice President of Medical Affairs preferred. Prior leadership experience in hospital and/or physician clinical quality is required. Candidates with other significant physician leadership experience will also be considered.
Experience in developing data tools to evaluate clinical outcomes and an understanding of healthcare information technology is required. Previous experience with EMR implementations is helpful.
