PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB:
To develop career planning strategies for students seeking employment during and after attending Alcorn; assist in obtaining employment in a position for which they qualify in various industries including business, government, education and other professional areas.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:
• Assist students and alumni in exploring and choosing career-related experience, developing job search skills, and achieving employment or gaining acceptance into graduate or professional schools
• Provide services to the students and alumni who are seeking employment or information regarding graduate study via our online job search engine and database Jobs4Braves Career Link job site
• Sponsor a series of employee expectation seminars and workshops; such as resume writing, dress for success and fashion show, networking, career fair preparation, mock interviews and leadership
• Sponsor career, graduate school, and teacher recruitment fairs
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Promote the university by participating in community, state, and national events or meetings, and by developing partnerships with industry and secondary education institutions.
• Direct, coordinate, and evaluate the activities of personnel, including support staff, engaged in administering academic institutions, departments or alumni organizations.
• Develop and maintain effective relationships with recruiters and students
• Manage the on-campus interview program
• Develop, implement and/or maintain career planning programs
• Develop, market, and administer fall and spring recruiting programs, including creating publications and advertising materials, coordinating mailings and forecasting target markets
• Review and critique résumés
• Provide personal counseling to students and alumni
• Communicate with individuals and entities that are interested in hiring students and/or alumni and/or posting jobs on Career Services’ web site and take needed action
• Prepare annual reports; Institutional Effectiveness Plans and other reports as assigned
• Develop and oversee Career Services’ Corporate Advisory Board
• Develop and oversee the Faculty Career Services Liaison Program
• Develop and conduct educational programs, workshops and seminars, including but not limited to, résumé and cover letter workshops, career options programming, appropriate dress, career fair preparation, internship preparation, networking receptions and mock interviews
• Establish operational policies and procedures and make any necessary modifications, based on analysis of operations, demographics, and other research information.
• Plan, administer, and control budgets, maintain financial records, and produce financial reports.
• Recruit, hire, train, and terminate departmental personnel.
• Advise students on issues such as course selection, progress toward graduation, and career decisions.
• Formulate strategic plans for the institution
• Perform career development and job search counseling for students and alumni
• Develop and maintain career services databases
• Develop and make revisions to all Career Services publications and policies
• Strategic and budgetary planning development
• Oversee involvement in off-campus job fairs
• Prepare statistical and other reports for internal and external constituencies
• Protect the confidentiality of information with areas of position responsibilities by preventing unauthorized release, both verbally and/or in writing
• Create vision and provide leadership for program development and implementation; supervise professional and support direct reports; support staff to develop necessary skills
• Create and promote student, faculty, and administration interaction in the formative process for students with respect to career development
• Oversee the technology needs and development of Career Services
• Create, enhance, and increase placement activities for students and alumni
• Assist with special projects, committees, and other duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President
for Student Life
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s preferred in Student Affairs, Education Counseling, Higher Education Administration, Public Administration or related field. A minimum five (5) years of experience in a supervisory capacity. The Director should have excellent interpersonal, administrative and supervisory skills, as well as strong skills in written and oral expression. The position also requires computer literacy, an understanding and appreciation of career services database software and on-line resources, and the willingness to respond to the needs of students and employers in an increasingly technologically-oriented society.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledgeable in managing the development of all office procedures, handbooks and brochures
• Ability to maintain the student resume database and schedule on-campus interviews daily
• Ability to organize career fairs, company visits, informational sessions and career oriented workshops
• Ability to serve as Campus Liaison for the National Urban League’s Black Executive Exchange Program
• Ability to aggressively market the university to external agencies and public industries
• Ability to make effective presentations
• Ability to counsel/teach students the skills and abilities needed for a successful job search
• Ability to interact with a variety of constituencies
• Ability to create effective marketing materials and collateral pieces
• Ability to maintain positive approach under pressure
• Excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to write and speak persuasively
• Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment
• Excellent organizational skills
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office software and other related career development software
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Ability to sit at a workstation for extended periods
2. Occasional ability to lift, carry, and put away parcels weighing up to 50 pounds
3. Normal physical mobility, which includes movement from place to place on the job taking distance and speed into account
4. Normal physical strength to handle routine office materials and tools
5. Normal endurance
