Summary

Wikipedia's goal is to provide every single person with the sum of all human knowledge and MySQL is how we store it. As a Database Engineer at the Wikimedia Foundation, you will be responsible for the availability and performance of our database infrastructure. You should be able to optimize queries, automate anything, benchmark and test new builds of MySQL and MariaDB, plan for disaster recovery, and implement backup systems. You will be joining a small mission driven team of talented veteran operations engineers. As the 5th most trafficked site, there is literally nowhere else serving as many page views per engineer. Responsibilities

Build and tune database servers and data migration processes

Identify and recommend tools and services for managing database infrastructure

Hardware sizing requirements for database loads based on efficient use of multi-core systems

Update and tune MySQL instances in a high volume environment

Performance implementation and optimization

Setup and monitor data backups

Monitor key metrics and respond to system outages

Establish database capacity planning framework

Requirements

5+ years working with RDBMS in a high volume production environment

A minimum of 2+ years as a MYSQL DBA in a LAMP environment

Network and I/O performance tuning experience

Solid knowledge of physical and logical database design

Solid knowledge in schema design principles with demonstrated aptitude to apply best practices for scalable designs and influence developers

Experience supporting MySQL in a web environment

Expert knowledge of Linux internals and various file systems

Comfortable working in a highly collaborative, consensus-oriented environments

Expertise with configuration management systems such as Puppet, Chef or cfengine

BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or equivalent work experience

Preferred

Able to work independently where needed, and can work remotely as part of a globally distributed team

Proficiency in a scripting language (PHP preferred)

Solid experience with LVM (Logical Volume Management) and snapshots, Perl, Nagios, Cacti, Subversion

Demonstrated contributions to open-source software projects
