School/Unit Harvard University Information Technology Sub-Unit ------------ Location USA - MA - Cambridge Job Function Information Technology Time Status Full-time Department HUIT, Administrative Technology Services Salary Grade 059 Union 00 - Non Union, Exempt or Temporary Duties & Responsibilities Harvard University Information Technology (HUIT) is seeking a Manager of Software Development to manage a team of software engineers that develops and maintains mission critical, database-driven, web-based applications that support administrative processes for Harvard University and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS). As a hands-on manager, the candidate will design, implement and maintain software solutions as well as provide technical project and team leadership. The candidate will oversee the software development team and its responsibility for all phases of the software development lifecycle. This position will also assess the technical options available to solve customer problems, review current development procedures and investigate alternatives where applicable, and work closely with infrastructure technical groups to maintain an optimal technical environment for applications.

The key responsibilities for this include the following:
Ensure successful delivery of and oversee all phases of development for existing and new applications, from planning and design to development, deployment and ongoing maintenance

Provide leadership in implementing industry best practices for software development and enforce application development design, coding, deployment and documentation standards

Oversee identification and resolution of software issues

Cross train technical staff across applications to enhance cross coverage support

Hire, mentor and support technical staff, including performance management and career development
Other activities include but are not limited to the following:

Review project plans and timelines and work with HUIT management to schedule effort and report regularly on project status

Work with clients and product management staff to understand administrative needs and determine IT solutions

Work with other technical support organizations to define and implement system availability, disaster recovery and technology lifecycle management strategies for applications

Collaborate with appropriate HUIT staff on data modeling, software architecture and configuration tasks

Ensure alignment of business technology plans with architecture and standards

Write technical documentation Basic Qualifications To be considered for this role, candidates must have the following experience and skills:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent

Minimum 8+ years of overall experience designing and developing software applications

Experience in Java, JavaScript, SQL, PL/SQL, HTML, Tomcat/BEA/WebLogic, RDMS (preferably Oracle)

Effective skills to estimate, plan and assign work

Strong technical and analytical problem solving skills

Experience with all phases of the software development life cycle

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Strong aptitude and desire to learn new technologies and tools

Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines Additional Qualifications In addition to the required skills, the ideal candidate will have these highly desirable skills:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Computer Information Systems or similar technical discipline

Experience working in a higher education environment

Background working with Windows and Unix/Linux operating systems

Experience with Spring MVC, Hibernate, Subversion, and Maven

Experience with Agile project management methodology

3+ years of experience as a senior developer, including mentoring others and code reviews helpful

Proven ability to work collaboratively and across boundaries to continually improve processes, products and services with a strong focus on quality and customer service

Ability to motivate and lead teams

Experience as a technical manager or development lead managing the delivery of technology solutions in a client centric organization including application development, project management, web application development tools, relational database technology, application server technologies and object oriented programming
