DUTIES:
This position involves a multi-grade career ladder . The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of WG-02. At the WG-01 grade level, the incumbent performs assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. The incumbent will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of WG-02. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds. Promotion is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.

These positions are located in the Food Service Unit of the VA New Jersey Health Care System in East Orange, NJ and Lyons, NJ. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Transporting food and food items to designated areas using bulk hot/cold food conveyers;
  • Preparing toast and beverages as required by menu;
  • Serving meals to patients, employees, and guests in the cafeteria or by tray service to patients;
  • Prewashing and operating dish machines;
  • Storing glasses, flatware, dishes, serving utensils, pots, and pans;
  • Cleaning kitchen equipment, floors, walls, windows, hoods, and wall fans;
  • Removing trash to the designated area;
  • Washing pots and pans;
  • Unloading supply trucks and placing supplies in proper storage;
  • Collecting soiled trays from bedsides and returning trays to dishwashing area;
  • Working on the tray assembly line;
  • Setting up the cold food counter for tray assembly;
  • Portioning cold food such as salads and desserts;
  • Serving all patients in a courteous and pleasant manner;
  • Performing related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: This is a part time position, salary will be prorated. Schedule is either 10:30am - 2:30pm or 3:00pm - 7:00pm and includes weekends.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C ( www.opm.gov/qualifications/x-118c ). For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

You will be rated on the following Job Elements as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

  • Likelihood of success in performing the duties of a food service worker.
  • Ability to handle weights and loads.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Ability to operate with dexterity and safety.
Physical effort and work conditions : Work requires continuous standing, walking, bending, and reaching above the head. Moderate physical effort is required in the performance of the manual tasks such as lifting trays and dishes, and pushing food conveyors. The food service worker may be required to lift up to 45 pounds. Work is performed in normal temperatures most of the time. The food service worker is subject to above normal temperature when operating the dish machine and below normal temperatures when working in walk-in refrigerators. He/she is also subject to cuts and burns when preparing and serving food and washing dishes and kitchen utensils, and to the hazard of falling or slipping on floors.

Veteran's Preference :

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
Applicants will be ranked based on three quality groups, as follows:

Best Qualified - applicants possessing knowledge, skills and abilities that substantially exceed the minimum qualifications of the position and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;

Well Qualified - applicants possessing knowledge, skills and abilities that exceed the minimum qualification of the position and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;

Qualified - applicants possessing knowledge, skills and abilities that meet the minimum qualifications of the position.

After the vacancy announcement closes, reviewed applications are evaluated against the questionnaire responses and placed in the appropriate quality group. Qualified veterans will be afforded preference by being placed at the top of the appropriate quality group. Qualifying veterans with a service-connected disability of 10% or more will be placed at the top of the best-qualified group. The best-qualified group is the first to be referred to the hiring facility for further consideration and possible interview. The remaining groups may be referred based on the number of applicants available.
