ASCEND is a hub for breakthrough ideas and proven strategies that move parents, especially women, and their children beyond poverty toward educational success and economic security. Ascend takes a “two-generation” approach, focusing on opportunities for both parents and their children. The program concentrates on three key content areas — education, economic supports, and social capital. Ascend's core strategies are to spark a new conversation around low-income families in the U.S.; convene and engage across diverse sectors to build political will and develop a network of leaders; and elevate effective two-generation policies and community solutions. Basic Function :
Ascend seeks an intern for the summer of 2012 to assist the Ascend team with communications, administrative, and logistical support. The intern will work full-time with the Program Associates responsible for strategic communications, operations, and logistics on developing content for a new website, and marketing for upcoming events, conferences, and convenings. The intern should have an interest in issues of family economic security, and he/she should be able to provide research and analysis on issues impacting low-income families in the United States – including education, economic supports, and social capital.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Conduct research and gather/analyze issue brief, reports, and materials
Assist in research for new projects
Assist in developing and organizing content for Ascend website and social media
Support Program Associates with communications and messaging for conferences, roundtables, forums, and other convenings
Assist the Ascend team with daily operations, including administrative tasks
Knowledge, Education and Experience :
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Experience with a variety of social media, preferably in the context of professional or student organization work
Outstanding organizational skills, with emphasis on time-management, attention to detail, and the ability to plan, organize, and carry out multiple activities
Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team
Excellent computer skills including Microsoft products (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
Flexibility, creativity, and a commitment to excellence
