JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for the operation (24 hours per day, seven days per week) of a 50-bed nursing unit with sub acute beds. Supervises and manages work schedules for unit staff including, but not limited to, licensed nurses, certified nursing assistants, valets, housekeeping assistants and medical records techs. Provides supervision and direction to staff. Enforces all facility policies, especially as they pertain to quality of performance, attendance and absenteeism. Enforces clinical standards of practice that ensure compliance with all regulatory guidelines. Maintains effective and productive working relationships with residents, family members, other ASVH department staff, clinics, hospitals and the VAMC. Oversees the resident assessment process to ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines. Provides training to staff on issues related to resident care. Collects, analyzes and reports quality of care data. Completes special projects including audits and investigations.


* Knowledge of gerontological/geriatric nursing theory and practices

* Knowledge of admission and safe discharge assessments and protocol.

* Knowledge of residents' condition and changing medical / physical / psychological care needs

* Acute med-surge or sub-acute experience highly desirable

* Proven leadership required

* Knowledge of effects of the aging process

* Knowledge of practices and procedures of team nursing

* Knowledge of practices and procedures of developing treatment plans for resident/patient care

* Knowledge of practices and procedures of pharmacology and medicine

* Knowledge of Federal, VA, State and agency laws, rules and regulations governing the practice of nursing within a skilled nursing facility, general professional nursing practices and the security and control of medical supplies and medications and dispensing thereof

* Knowledge of practices and procedures of team nursing

* Knowledge of community resources necessary to provide quality care

* Knowledge of effective supervision, basic staff development principles necessary for training subordinate staff

* Skill in professional nursing methods and techniques (RN)

* Skills in observing and assessing behavior and progress of patients (RN)

* Skill in applying and interpreting state and agency laws and regulations geriatric nursing practices

* Skill in developing and carrying out patient care plans within a team nursing concept (RN)

* Oral and written communication skills

* Interpersonal relationship skills

* Problem solving skills

* Supervisory skills

* Long-term care experience. Supervisory/charge experience

Must possess the following:

* A current license to practice as a registered nurse in Arizona

* A fingerprint clearance card issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety
