SCOPE: Perform functions to design, document, prototype, test, and assemble new metrology products; design and fabricate tools and fixtures used in assembly, compensation and calibration of products; and resolve issues arising in production, making decisions based on conclusions for which there is little precedent.
Design mechanical parts, assemblies, systems and fixtures as part of development of new products and support of existing products. Prepare 3D CAD models and detailed dimensioned drawings of parts and assemblies utilizing CAD tools.
Optimize designs for production using DFA/DFM principles and Concurrent Engineering.
Create models for documentation of designs for use in production processes for new or existing products.
Perform mechanical finite element analysis (FEA) of part and assembly designs.
Develop and implements test plans for mechanical assemblies and procedures, fixtures and tools for incoming inspection of custom machined parts and production assembly of mechanical systems. Evaluate and document test results.
Fabricate, assemble and test prototypes to verify performance to design criteria.
Consistently develop unique and innovative approaches in the solution of critical problems and broad design issues, impacting the product success and addressing future products and technologies.
BSME with 7 years experience, or MSME with 4 years experience
SolidWorks, Pro/E, or other solid modeling software proficiency
Experience with configuration management, at minimum from the engineering input perspective (rev control, drawing tree structuring, effectivity, backward compatibility, etc)
- Complex assemblies
- Drawing generation, per ASME/ISO Standards
- Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
- Tolerance Stackup Analysis
Experience in precision machine design including bearings, plastics, experience working with exotic materials
Experience with DFM/DFA Design for Manufacturing, Design for Assembly
Experience designing mechanisms
Experience with FEA is preferred
- Experience performing static stress and loading analyses
- Experience performing kinematic analyses
- Experience performing dynamic stress and loading analyses is a plus
Experience in thermal analysis required
Experience in Metrology and uncertainty analysis preferred
Demonstrated ability to interact with all aspects of projects from shop-floor manufacturing issues to conceptual designs
