The Radiation Therapist delivers radiation treatments to cancer patients following the prescription of the Radiation Oncologist. The Radiation Therapist operates various highly technical equipment with accuracy and precision. The Radiation Therapist participates in clinical and/or didactic instruction and evaluation of radiation therapist (RTT) Students. The Therapist adheres to established policies and procedures of the department and company. The Therapist complies with local, state and federal rules and regulations and the requirements of accrediting bodies. The Therapist provides service to all age patients; neonatal, pediatric (birth - 11 years), adolescent, (12 - 17 years), adults (18 - 65 years) and geriatric (66 and older).

1. Performs daily set up of patient treatment as prescribed by physician and delivers daily dose of radiation according to treatment prescription

2. Communicates changes in patient to the physician daily. Aware of changes in pain level and reports to nursing as indicated

3. Enters correct information into computer for billing of patients

4. Schedules patients for daily treatment in appropriate time slots to allow ample time for individual procedure

5. Takes proper care of equipment and notifies supervisor of any equipment failures, malfunctions or change in operation

6. Maintains accurate and complete records of patient treatment

7. Performs daily quality assurance checks on therapy equipment and accurately logs information in appropriate book

8. Keeps room clean, neat and orderly. Keeps all items stored according to hospital protocol. Keeps control area free of clutter and personal items

9. Maintains awareness of individual needs. Accommodates customer requests when possible

10. Ensures patient sees physician for evaluation on a weekly basis and as needed

11. Obtains weekly port films - records in chart and obtains approval from physician prior to continuing treatment

12. Instructs and evaluates the clinical and didactic instruction to the students in the Radiation Therapy School

13. Participates in an on-call rotation

14. Assumes responsibility for machine warm up procedures

15. Maintains safe environment for patients

16. Refers patient to lab for testing when physician orders and verifies results prior to continued treatment

17. Performs other duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as required to meet the needs of the facility and internal or external customers

Additional Requirements
  • Graduate of JRC-HEA approved program in Radiologic Technology. Completion of approved program in Radiation Therapy with board certification in both areas
  • Must be board certified in Radiation Therapy, or board eligible. Prefer minimum of 6 months prior experience as a Radiation Therapist
  • Registered with the American Registry of Radiological Technologists with certification in Radiation therapy. Must be licensed in Radiation Therapy in the state of Kentucky. Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
