This position is created to provide structured clinical training to medical physics graduates in order to assure proper clinical instruction and preparation for board examinations. The resident will perform basic medical physicist duties under the supervision of a residency director and other physics dosimetry, and physician staff. The resident will also perform a research project leading to process improvement or improved patient treatment techniques. Supports and adheres to The University of Kansas Hospital Code of Ethics and Business Standards.
* Shares responsibility for the design and implementation of the aspects of the quality management program that involves the use of external beam radiotherapy equipment as well as the review and proposal of changes of the procedures followed by radiation therapy staff.
* Patient dosimetry, including generating new treatment plans, reviewing plans created by dosimetrists, and development and use of protocols for checking monitor unit calculations.
* Clinical training in medical physics, including training in: linear accelerator selection, acceptance, commissioning, and quality assurance; dosimetric principles and patient treatment planning; clinical oncology; radiation measurement and safety, including shielding design; brachytherapy physics and techniques; and advanced delivery techniques such as IMRT, SRS, SRT, and IGRT.
* Didactic training in medical physics, including principles of radiation physics, diagnostic and therapy x-ray production, diagnostic imaging, nuclear medicine and radiopharmacy physics, radiobiology, and journal review.
* Clinical project to improve processes or patient treatments in radiation oncology.
* Periodically evaluates all equipment for continued utility, appropriateness, reliable performance, age, and condition and makes recommendations on practical life span, obsolescence, and replacement.
* Assist management of radiation oncology information systems, including development of usage protocols, maintenance and data storage.
* Teaching duties for student radiation therapists and dosimetrists.
* Radiation safety duties for the practice, including assisting with employee monitoring, reports, and regulatory issues.
* MS or PhD in medical physics or related hard science or engineering.
* Differential equation level mathematic skills
* Competent with Windows, Unix, Linux computer platforms and common software.
