Under minimal supervision provides full secretarial support. Work includes typing non-routine correspondence, drafting and editing materials, maintaining departmental filing system, maintaining appointment calendars of both internal and external commitments, etc. Discretion and judgement is required daily in the screening of telephone calls, scheduling of appointments and in meeting established priorities.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Approximately six to twelve months progressively more responsible secretarial work experience; graduation from high school including or supplemented by course work in secretarial science or business subjects; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities.

  • Knowledge of Business English, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

  • Knowledge of office practices, procedures and equipment.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology is desirable.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in the performance of duties.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, supervisors, other employees, and the general public.

  • Ability to take and transcribe dictation or use dictaphone.

  • Ability to pay close attention to detail when typing, filing, proofreading, etc., up to fifty percent of work time.
