This position is located at the New Mexico Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office (FWCO) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The employee in this position assists with a variety of fisheries management activities related to federal and state protected fishes, recreational fisheries on tribal lands, and conduct of long-term studies related to federal water projects. Specialized emphasis will be placed on recovery actions for federally protected fishes in the San Juan River and Gila River Basins.

This is a TERM position NTE 13 Months, but MAY be extended up to 4 years at management’s discretion.

  • Performs a variety of operational tasks and applies standard methods and practices relating to normal fishery management activities.
  • Collects and analyzes scientific data regarding fish community structure, macro habitat use, and water quality and fluvial hydrology.
  • Guides others in the collection, preservation, identification, and enumeration of fish specimens.
  • Compiles, analyzes, and presents data using database, statistical and graphic computer software.
  • Assists in program planning, budget preparation and execution of the planned programs by reviewing documents, making recommendations, gathering data, and summarizing information.
  • Prepares reports and memos for use by fellow scientists, for scientific publication, and for presentation at professional meetings inside and outside of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
  • Presents information to groups, explaining programs of fisheries management and conservation as they relate to ecology and economy.
  • Uses specialized sampling techniques and methods including river rafting, back packing, passive and active gear, and backcountry horse/mule travel to gather data and study actual and potential impacts on fishery resources as a result of water development projects.
  • Operates and assists with the maintenance of government-owned equipment and vehicles.
  • Maintains field sampling and other gear.

Qualifications for GS-0482-09 Fish Biologist

Basic Education Requirement (you must meet A or B below to qualify):

A. A Bachelor's Degree with a major in a biological science that includes the following course work: 1) at least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of fishery biology; AND 2) at least 12 semester hours in the animal sciences subjects such as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects .

B. A combination of education and experience that is equivalent to a major in a biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours) of which a minimum of 6 semester hours were in aquatic subjects and 12 semester hours were in the animal sciences as described in “A” above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the Basic Education Requirement, you must also meet Specialized Experience listed below:

At least one year of full-time specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level (comparable to GS-07) in the Federal service. The experience equipped me with the knowledge, skills and ability to successfully perform the duties of this position.

Examples of specialized experience must include:
Serving as a professional Fish Biologist at a field fishery management station or fish production hatchery; data collection, database management and routine data analysis; authoring scientific reports which summarize findings and recommendations and presenting these findings at scientific meetings and conferences; operating and maintaining motor vehicles as well as well as fish culture equipment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
  • Work is done indoors and out.
  • The employee encounters variable weather conditions and exposure to insects while working outdoors. Use of boats in all kinds of weather on lakes, and along streams and rivers.
  • Terrain with steep slopes, rocky stream beds, and unmaintained trails are encountered.
  • Prolonged standing, walking, stooping, bending, and climbing are required as well as lifting, carrying, and setting up equipment.
  • Items weighing up to 10 pounds are handled routinely and items 50 pounds or more are occasionally handled.
  • Considerable driving, hiking, climbing, and rafting are required
