The Director of Children, Youth and Family Ministries shall foster a strong education program through building relationships with adult volunteers, teachers, children and youth, and church leaders that strengthens commitment to grace, compassion and community as a demonstration of faith in Jesus Christ. As part of the ministry staff at California Heights United Methodist Church, the Director of Children, Youth and Family Ministries is expected to be a collaborative, creative, professional member of the leadership of the church. This is a full time salaried position. Salary based on experience.

The Director of Children, Youth and Family Ministries plays a major role in the faith development of all ages within the church, both as a leader and as an example. CHUMC seeks a person who has a solid understanding of the foundations of the Christian faith, United Methodist tradition, or is willing to learn, and who has a strong desire to nurture children and youth in the Christian faith. We seek a person who generates new ideas and programs and who values a team concept of ministry.

Responsibilities include providing general direction, guidance and vision for all areas of Children and Youth ministries with a focus on Christian education and spiritual formation. The position encompasses oversight of nursery and childcare, the Sunday School program, Children’s Message in worship, Youth Group programming, Bible Studies, Vacation Bible School, neighborhood outreach and service/work programs and the full-inclusion of our Children’s Center children and their families.

Minimum Recruiting Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree, seminary degree preferred
A sense of call and a passion for working with children and youth
Experience in Christian Education
Experience in working with children, youth and families
Good organizational, teaching, and administration skills
Good communication skills, both written and verbal
Experience recruiting and managing volunteers
Ability to be self-directed and work as part of a team
A progressive theology that expresses the open, inclusive nature of God's grace in the world.

A growing knowledge and profession of the Christian faith.
Active participation in the worship life of the church.
Commitment to and encouragement of the ministries of the United Methodist Church both locally and in collaboration with other churches.
Organizational and management skills necessary to plan, implement and work within designated budgets, procedures and timelines.
Openness to learn and participate in on-going education and formational opportunities
All staff is expected to perform their duties in such a manner and spirit as becomes a Christian and which will make people feel welcomed in the church. In addition, staff members are expected to recognize tasks which need to be done and to undertake them on their own initiative, or to draw them to the attention of the pastor or SPRC if the tasks are beyond their ability or time.
Physical requirements include but are not limited to ability to lift and carry moderate weight (15 – 30 lbs) and ability to bend, and crouch while working with infants and toddlers.
A valid California Driver’s License.

Responsibilities:Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Developing cohesive and forward-looking Ministry Teams for Children and Youth which are charged with providing a well-coordinated and exciting program that encourages spiritual growth and Christian formation.
Administering curriculum, scope and evaluation of weekly Sunday School program.
Identifying, recruiting, orienting, training and supporting volunteer teachers and leaders.
Ensuring that church nursery, Sunday school and children/youth ministries’ programs are appropriately staffed in accordance with the CHUMC Sanctuaries of Safety Policy.
Overseeing attendance records, classroom supplies, general maintenance and upkeep of child-friendly and inviting classrooms.
Providing oversight and coordination for Vacation Bible School program.
Designing, developing and implementing weekly middle school and high school programs.
Coordinating regular local and annual youth service projects including fundraising.
Encouraging through example, guidance and advocacy the full participation of youth in the worship life of the congregation.
Working with the pastor in developing an annual Confirmation program.
Identifying, recruiting, orienting, training and supporting volunteer youth leaders.
Collaborating with church and community leaders and parents on future ministries related to children and youth.
Suggesting and implementing new ideas for ministry and outreach in the area of children, youth and their families.
Participating in weekly worship and presenting “Moments with Children” program.
Serving as church staff liaison to the Children’s Center Executive Board, staff and families. Providing weekly “chapel” worship time with preschool and after school children.
Reviewing the church’s present ministry with families.
Assessing the needs of families in church, Children’s Center and community.
Learning from church and community leaders and parents the hopes for future family ministries.
Designing, developing and coordinating of programs for families including parenting classes, support groups (single parents, divorce recovery, newlyweds, etc.), retreats, camp-outs, etc.
Attending Ministry Team meetings and other meetings as requested Attendance at weekly staff, Church Council meetings and other meetings as requested.
Setting goals and providing progress reports to the pastor, Staff-Parish Relations Committee and Children’s Ministry Team.

III. Accountability:
The position is responsible to the Senior Pastor for day-to day operations and the Staff Parish Relations Committee for fulfilling responsibilities defined in the job description, defining goals, evaluation and communication of concerns related to the performance of the position. In addition the position works closely with Church Council, Children’s Ministry Team, Youth Ministry Team, and Family Ministries Team.
