Role Responsibility: Position Definition & Summary:
Under direction provides instruction on the middle and/or secondary level to students; assure that all students learn the basic essential skills at each grade level. Does related work as required.
Position Expectations and Essential Functions: Curriculum Development:
Keeps current in the subject matter knowledge and learning theory and is willing to share this knowledge for continual improvement of the school’s curriculum.
Assists on the on-going curriculum revision process including the revision of written courses of study.
Becomes acquainted with supplemental services beneficial to students as an extension of regular classroom activities.
Classroom Management:
Models pro-social behavior and adheres to highest ethical standard.
Implements, in accordance with guidelines, reasonable rules of classroom behavior and appropriate techniques that are consistently applied.
Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
Shares responsibility during the school day for the supervision of students in all areas of the school.
Provides for the supervision of assigned students when circumstances require a brief absence from the assignment.
Public Relations:
Upholds and enforces board policy, administrative procedures, and school rules and regulations, and is supportive of them to the public.
Maintains appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance and appropriate use of conference and planning time.
Strives to communicate the positive aspects of the school program to the public in word and deed.
Works cooperatively with parents to strengthen the educational program for their children.
Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with other staff members.
Professional Growth:
Continues professional growth through attendance at workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning.
Maintains membership in appropriate professional organizations.
Cooperates with the administration in planning appropriate in-service training programs at school or at the district level.
Attends staff, department and committee meetings as required.
Student Evaluation:
Evaluates accomplishments of students on a regular basis using multiple assessment methods such as teacher made tests, samples of students’ work, mastery skills check lists, criterion-referenced tests and norm-referenced tests.
Makes appropriate adjustments in the instructional program as required and directed.
Respects the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics and state and federal laws.
The Ideal Candidate: C. Position Requirements: Education:
Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor’s degree in education or related field.
Other Requirements:
Appointees must possess a teacher's certificate or eligibility for certification as a teacher in the state where the work site is located.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in the state where the work site is located only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
F. Physical Requirements & Work Environment: Talking: Ability to express and exchange ideas via spoken word during activities in which they must convey details or important spoken instructions to others accurately, sometimes quickly and loudly. Hearing and Vision: Ability to perceive the nature of sounds with no less than 40 dB loss at Hz, 1000 Hz and 2000 Hz with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication. Work requires a minimum standard of visual acuity with or without correction that will enable employees to complete clerical tasks, and observe youth. Dexterity: Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, lift, grasp, and be able to perceive the attributes of an object such as size, shape, and temperature. Movements frequently and regularly required using wrists, hands and/or fingers. Physical Strength: Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally. Position is mainly sedentary work (office work), but may on occasion include physical force execution. Employee may be subject to temperature changes, but the employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions as the work is predominantly inside. Language: Ability to write complex sentences, using proper punctuation, and ability to communicate in complex sentences using normal word order with present and past tenses. Processing and Reasoning: Ability to exercise self-control in potentially volatile situations such as in verbal and physical confrontations. Must be able to work and concentrate amidst distractions and noise. Ability to assist youth with problem solving and maintaining self-control in volatile situations.
The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level is usually moderate as the primary work environment includes infirmary, school vocational classroom, living quarters of residents, various indoor and outdoor facility recreation areas and other areas frequented by residents. Work environment may involve exposure to noise, dust, fumes, dangerous machinery, chemicals, body fluids, falling objects, and aggressive verbal and physical behavior from students, and weather and temperature extremes.
