The Special Education Coordinator works as a key member of the campus leadership team to ensure that the school provides appropriate programs in the least restrictive environment for all students with special needs. This includes managing the pre-referral and IEP processes, maintaining student data, communicating with parents, and ensuring that the school operates in compliance with special education law and procedures at all times. Campus leadership team roles are twelve-month positions and lead development, refinement, and implementation of all aspects of the school’s academic and culture programs in accordance with the DC Prep Way. Leaders are on duty during regular school hours as well as nights and weekends to handle parent communication, staff after school activities, and/or to complete administrative work. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Over the next five years, DC Prep will open four additional schools and, ultimately, grow to ten campuses enrolling 3,300 students. As part of this growth, we are committed to expanding the intensive professional development that has been a cornerstone of the DC Prep model to not only ensure success in current positions but to prepare teachers and leaders for positions of increased responsibility as DC Prep expands.

School leadership team members hired for the 2013-14 school year will participate in leadership development designed to hone their skills for success in their current roles while also developing expertise needed for future leadership opportunities. Their development as leaders will be focused on participation in cohort professional development and customized coaching while also gaining practical on-the-ground experience.

Responsibilities:

Special Education Coordination

• Monitor compliance with special education processes and timelines
• Interpret and articulate special education regulations, policies, and procedures to principal, teachers, and parents so as to ensure compliance
• Oversee all aspects of student referrals, IEP development, diagnostic assessments, and annual/tri-annual reviews and institute and maintain a documentation system that captures and organizes all such data
• Coordinate and lead school-based special education multi-disciplinary team meetings
• Coordinate the set-up and delivery of IEP-mandated direct services to students
• Assist in the coordination of the provision of related services with related service care providers
• Oversee the development, tracking, dissemination and proper implementation of IEP-mandated accommodations for students with special needs during state testing events
• Consult with teachers to develop classroom interventions for struggling students
• Assist teachers in preparing lessons and materials for the purpose of improving educational access for students with disabilities
• Engage as an active member of the Student Support Team to insure proper early intervention supports and services are in place for students at risk
• Provide small group or individual intervention for students with special needs

Professional Development

• Participate as an active member of the school’s academic team to support teachers in professional growth and development
• Lead weekly department meetings and individual coaching as part of on-going professional development to special education staff members
• Provide resources, workshops, and on-going training to school staff on special education practices
• Provide support for the implementation of remedial intervention programs

Assessment

• Coordinate and implement assessment accommodations for students with special needs
• Help administer the school’s identified screening, progress monitoring, diagnostic, and outcome based assessments

Professionalism

• Fully participate in opportunities for professional growth including coaching and leadership development provided by DC Prep and external professional development
• Keep current in subject matter knowledge and learning theory and be willing to share this knowledge for continual improvement of the school’s curriculum
• Take full responsibility for all leadership duties and share responsibility for school-wide activities

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND WORK EXPERIENCE

• Two years of lead teaching experience with a special education population, preferably in an urban public school, with a record of high student achievement required
• Prior experience as a special education coordinator preferred
• Master’s degree in Special Education or a related education field
