The Assistant Director of Veteran Affairs is responsible for overseeing the appraisal, collation and certification of credit hours for VA education programs chapters and Hazelwood exemption, toward approved academic and certificate programs. The Assistant Director of Veteran Affairs collaborates and coordinates with Texas A&M University-Kingsville for final certification daily, along with records specialist, transcript analyst, financial aid office, business office and the graduation specialist in ensuring the student receives the necessary benefits thus leading to the timely completion of degree requirements for the VA student. This position has supervision responsibilities.
Typically Monday - Friday; 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.; may require some evening and weekend hours.

Responsible for managing the daily operations of the Veterans Certification Office and supervising full and part-time employees, along with VA student workers. Provides training, support, and regulatory updates to departmental staff as needed. Interacts with other offices and external stakeholders as necessary for the successful execution of departmental responsibilities related to providing Veterans service.
Responsible for providing counseling to current and prospective students regarding Veterans services and education assistance programs. Processes Veterans education benefits in accordance with Applicable regulations, institutional policies and Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Communicates with students regarding discrepancies or benefits related issues as needed.
Interprets and maintains knowledge of current federal, state, and institutional policies, procedures, and regulations pertaining to Veterans affairs. Monitors institutional compliance with such policies, procedures, and regulations through established internal audit mechanisms. Prepares for external audits by State Approving Agency and/or Department of Veterans Affairs. Ensures office operates within established key performance indicators.
Develops, implements, and maintains service programs to meet the needs of student Veterans, both collaboratively with other departments/entities and independently. Conducts peer program reviews and participates in association conference/workshops to identify best practices.
Assists the Director in departmental planning and policy development. This includes maintaining current operational manuals, establishing communication plans, and creating/updating departmental web pages and publications.
Assists with the planning and execution of outreach events related to Veterans services and education benefits. Prepares written correspondence/reports such as letters to veterans and the VA, reports on veteran recruitment efforts, and annual report to state seeking approval to train veterans. Assists in the presentation of workshops/orientation for students/community/faculty and staff over VA resources and guidelines.
Performs other duties as assigned. Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples necessarily include all of the duties performed.
Creates required Veterans Affairs reports as needed.
Two (2) years or more experience working in a veteran affairs office in a higher education setting.
Three (3) years or more working in a veteran affairs office in a higher education setting and some certification experience.
