Eastern Washington University and its Office of Global Initiatives invites applications for an Immigration Advisor and Retention Specialist. Under the oversight of the Director of International Student Services, this position will advise students while helping them identify academic and engagement opportunities that meet their personal and academic objectives.

This position also processes related forms (paper and electronic), communicates with students, assists in problem resolution throughout the duration of their time at EWU and assists students preparing to return home. The Immigration Advising & Retention Specialist is responsible for all SEVIS related compliance issues for matriculated international students. This position acts as a liaison for all international students between university offices, student organizations, and community organizations. This position may also assume additional administrative responsibilities as assigned, in a multifunction office for international student outreach and support.

Outstanding interpersonal skills, to include stellar listening abilities, are required for success in this position. Superior written and verbal communication is essential, as is a service-minded attitude, demonstrated by an increase in degree-seeking student retention at EWU.

Conditions of Employment :

U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required for this position, as a result of US Dept of Homeland Security requirements, stemming from the position's responsibilities for accessing the SEVIS system and for ensuring SEVIS compliance.

Valid drivers' license and acceptable driving record is required, as is the ability and willingness to drive locally to attend meetings, escort students and other international visitors, and other job related responsibilities.

Availability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally, involving overnight and multi-day travel.

Position primarily works normal daytime hours, but will be required to work evenings/weekends as needed to fulfil position responsibilities.

Position will work with students and other international visitors from all over the world. Ability to interact and work well with a highly diverse international student population is essential and required.

Minimum Qualifications :

o Bachelor's degree

o U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required

o Strong working knowledge of *all* of the following:
---F1 and J1 visas
---Immigration regulations in a higher education setting

o Prior working experience serving as the DSO for a large organization

o Three year minimum track record of successful student service and interpersonal communication experience within higher education

o Ability to work well with a diverse international student population of a predominantly non-native English speaking population

o Valid drivers' license and acceptable driving record

o Positive, team-orientation balanced with strong personal initiative; excellent peer communication, team work, problem solving and inter-cultural skills

o Effective presentation and writing skills to engage students in programs and promote initiatives within the university community

o Flexibility to adapt to evolving job responsibilities as part of a rapidly changing and growing organizational unit

o Availability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally; willingness to organize and chaperone weekend trips with students

o Interest, experience and/or ability to promote cultural competency and/or diversity

Preferred Qualifications :
o Fluency in a second language (other than English) is desirable

o Working experience with sponsored international student populations

o 2-5 years of student advising experience with international students and/or individuals from diverse backgrounds; sensitivity to and appreciation for diverse traditions, perspectives and concerns of international students. - 19 months ago - save job - copy to clipboard
